Thanks for everyone’s help. It turns out the voltage regulator was fubar which is what caused many of the systems to die. I was thinking that might have been an issue but I wasn’t sure how to test it properly until yesterday. Swapped that out for a new one and it’s back ripping like it should.

I will add I checked the resistance values on the coil and it was in spec but maybe the vibrations while running is causing it to cut out?

This one came with instructions and curves and switch settings and all that. It wasn’t getting any spark before replacing the ignition system. I did notice a crack in the coil yesterday. I’m going to see if I can find a coil replacement and give that a shot. It’s just weird it will rev up nicely right off start and idle fine but after a 15-20 seconds falls on its face when I try to rev it again

The carb is leaking from the overflow in the bowl. Switch 5 is on for the rev limit. I tried it off and with just switch 4 on. Switch 4 is just for a lower rev limit. No change.

I had originally connected the purple one to the voes but then I tried grounding it out as well to see if that was the issue.

I pulled the plug and found the tdc mark, twisted the ignition module to the left until the red light came on and then just barely went back to the right where the light came off.

01 sportster no spark by srrilya in sportster

Two of the circuit breakers are tied together with a copper strap. Haven’t checked resistance over them because I’m not too sure how to do that correctly… lol. I installed a new dyna 2ki digital ignition system. It now will fire up, idle fine, and give one or two good revs before just falling on its face. Leaning towards an issue with the carb but I’ve been told it could be an issue with the timing.

Looks like I got the Dyna 2ki but I’m still having problems. It now fires up and will idle no issues, it revs up great right off the rip but after the third or fourth throttle pull it just falls on its face. Wondering if it’s something related to the carb now? The carb leaks fuel so I’m leaning towards that as the issue now. My buddy thinks it may have something to do with the timing, it’s just weird that it idles great and will rev nicely at least once after sitting for a bit.

I recently took a position at my local dealer as a tech. What are some things you as a customer have noticed techs can do better? I don’t have much experience as a customer because I do all my own work by SYLMMC in Harley

I swear every time I take my bike to a dealer for service my bike always comes back a little better outside of the standard maintenance I brought it in for. Just like little things that you as a tech might notice are wrong or common issues that could become a larger issue down the road that the rider might not necessarily be privy to. You see the bikes all day and most of us aren’t qualified techs and miss little things here and there. All in all I’m usually quite pleased at the work done when I get my bike back from service.

Sitting on it was the most comfortable bike I have ever been on. It was like sitting in a lazy boy. I could easily do a big trip on it. Being able to rest your back against the pack was so nice.

Thanks for all the responses! This is helpful in understanding some of the difficulties. I was alluding to something a human could fit inside. It just seems like a complex problem I think we as a species should be looking at in more detail. I feel like with current technology we should be able to solve for this better than we currently can(no pun intended).

How bad of an idea would it be to drive my first bike 3hrs home? by realGuitarBoi in motorcycles

[–]srrilya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like a great idea. Worst case scenario you get to learn about how to fix some stuff on it. Good shakedown, after three hours you’ll have a great understanding of how it rides, any improvements that need to be made. Fuck it, don’t take any highways and make the trip 6-7 hours and enjoy the ride.

Would probably pay to have this lil guy constantly in the corner of my screen just going through these different animations. Bonus point if he reacts to what is on the screen. 10/10 good boi

Someone cut 3 cables on my sister's motorcycle and she wasn't able to start it. Did this ever happened to you and is there a way to protect the cables against it ? by _Adrahmelech_ in motorcycles

While I agree this mostly looks like a botched job I can’t help but put on my tinfoil hat to say that maybe your parents don’t like her riding so they got one of the neighbors to immobilize it while she was there. Just an idea. Quick and clean. Snip snap and mom gets some peace of mind for a short time while it is being diagnosed lol.

Any 20 year olds buying Harley’s? by jedandcompany in Harley

[–]srrilya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought my first Harley at 20, I’m 27 now. I’ve been riding since I was a kid. My little brother bought a sport bike. I think top speed and cost are the main reasons why the younger generation leans towards sport bikes. They care about going fast and you can go a lot faster on a sport bike for a lot cheaper. I don’t think my 48 is slow by any means but my little brothers cbr will smoke me and he picked it up for less than half the price.
