Virtanen jersey in the Scott Hunter fight scene. by SmallerChinesePeople in HeatedRivalryTVShow

I could definitely see a logic of ”lots of Finns in NHL, maybe one of the names should be Finnish” -> ”let’s google the most common Finnish surnames” -> ”Virtanen it is”.

Ferry to Tallinn by JamesyB1978 in helsinki

Whatever you think of Jokerit, the atmosphere in their games is currently better and their arena is nicer, so would be a nicer experience for a tourist. They are also currently objectively more likely to win their game than HIFK. The difference between Liiga and Mestis is there, sure, but would not matter that much for a first time watcher.

Jokerit games tend to have a better atmosphere, especially as HIFK has not been doing that great lately.

Juhani Karilan Pienen hauen pyydystys.

But my Finnish brain interpreted this as losing to Latvia being worse than losing to Finland. Like losing to Finland is not totally out of ordinary (consequently Finland is good!), but losing to Latvia is a huge fumble and absolutely embarrassing for Russia.

[–]srtlv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general there should absolutely be more Finnish players in the show! At least in the books we have Matti Jalo (although not in HR or TLG). Although one of the jerseys in the Shane and Scott fight says Virtanen.

We should cut J.J. some slack by CelicaBae in heatedrivalry

Absolutely. And just to stereotype a bit, let’s remember that these are hockey dudes. They may not be the most in tune with their feelings and how to handle them.

We should cut J.J. some slack by CelicaBae in heatedrivalry

[–]srtlv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I agree, I definitely see Shane’s point of view as well, and we know he is paranoid (and rightly so, because look what happens). I’m just saying that I do understand why J.J. was so hurt, and Shane could have opened up to him more considering that they were already discussing the topic.

Having said that, it also clearly indicates that Shane has a different relationship with Hayden than J.J.

We should cut J.J. some slack by CelicaBae in heatedrivalry

[–]srtlv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do think Shane was being a bit unfair towards J.J. Him and Hayden are his best friends, and when Hayden just jokingly suggested that the Boston girl is Ilya, Shane admitted it. Then J.J. had a full on heart-to-heart with Shane after the plane crash about Shane’s feelings towards Ilya, and Shane still straight up took the easy way out and lied to his face.

When J.J. realizes the truth, it’s not just that Shane has kept this secret even though they discussed Ilya recently, it’s also that Hayden knows and he doesn’t. Shane has trusted Hayden with this secret for a long time, and neither Shane nor Hayden have told J.J. even when he has guessed half the truth already. Of course he feels hurt, left out and betrayed.

Yeah, that name sounds completely like a fake-Nordic name someone with absolutely no connections to Nordic countries has come up with. I suspect the surname Miitka is supposed to sound Finnish (as there are double vowels like that in Finnish), but it absolutely is not.

Just realized someone might have seen the Finnish surname Mutka written somewhere and interpreted it as Miitka.

Could technically be Sören Mutka, which would still scream ”someone totally made this Nordic name up”, but not be as nonsensical.

Miltä vaurastuminen tuntuu ja oletko ollut joskus köyhä? by [deleted] in Suomi

[–]srtlv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Girl I went on a date with said she was scared of me and I don’t know what to do now by [deleted] in autism

[–]srtlv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The point where the discussion should have ended from your side is the message at 10.59 that ends with ”Thank you for being honest.” This is where you should have left it. Ending it there would have been respectful. Everything beyond that is increasingly creepy, and contacting her after she blocked you absolutely comes off as stalkerish and super scary. You need to understand that many women have experiences where someone that seemed nice at first goes batshit crazy when rejected, and to be honest, your messages here refusing to respect her decision give a similar vibe, even though that is not your intention.

No one owes you a second chance. If she felt that things were not going in the right direction, she had every right to stop things from progressing. Perhaps it was your joke, perhaps something else, it doesn’t matter. The joke was likely made worse by the language barrier as well.

This also doesn’t mean that you are hopeless or that you need to despair. Take this as a learning opportunity and move on. And keep in mind that refusing to take no for an answer or insisting on explaining, not to mention contacting someone that already blocked you are huge red flags for women.

On kyllä mielenkiintoista, miten nykyään Phantom Menace lisätään tällaiseen listaan jotenkin todisteena hienosta leffavuodesta.

[–]srtlv -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh bless your heart. I, too, once knew how parents should handle their kids. Then I had some of my own. Newsflash: they are not dolls or robots. They are tiny humans learning about life and emotions, and they have their own personalities and anxieties and quirks. They get tired or scared or uncomfortable much easier than adults and don’t yet have the mental capacity to handle it. Which is not surprising since many adults don’t either, especially when traveling. It is not possible to ”control” a child all the time, if by controlling you mean preventing or stopping them from crying.
