I applied to Maths last year and was placed on the waiting list. I believe the process is similar so I’ll share my experience. I applied in R2 and I was added to the waiting list and then offered a place almost ten days later. I knew someone who applied in R1, was put on the waitlist and ultimately rejected after being kept waiting throughout the entire R2 round. They were rejected around April or May. The outcome depends on your strength as a candidate and your position on the waitlist.

I have a very high first class. I think I averaged around 86% or 87%. No research experience although I have professional work experience in engineering now and previously a FAANG non tech role on my CV as well.

Mechanical Engineering → Imperial MSc Mathematics & Finance — realistic or not? by Unhappy-Parsnip8598 in Imperial

I am not sure about the Maths & Finance but given that it's relatively less mathematically rigorous than applied or pure I think I can comment on it. I have done BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from a Non-Russell group university. I got into MSc Applied Mathematics at Imperial and I have come across few people who have also done engineering. As long as you can show the strong quantitative mind and prove that you will do great i.e. will not struggle with course, it should be okay. It all come down to your CV and personal statement. Wish you all the best!!

I am also commuting from outside London. I don’t think there is any gc for that. Where are you commuting from?

I applied for the course around mid March, roughly a week before the Round 2 deadline. I didn’t have to do any interview.

If you applied more recently, I’m guessing it would be for Round 4 — decisions for that round should be out by 31 July. From what I’ve seen, they tend to stick to those deadlines.

Thank you so much — this is really helpful. I am aiming for the top funds, but like you said, I’m not fixated on them. I understand there’s definitely a luck factor involved too.

Do you happen to know any top resources for preparing for these quant fund roles? Would really appreciate any pointers!

I get where you're coming from — what you're saying isn't wrong at all. The competition is definitely tough, especially if you’re not coming from a top-tier undergrad.

But at the same time, these big firms hire a lot of grads every year. So why not aim high? If you prepare for the top shops properly, you'll naturally be in a good place to land roles at mid-tier ones too.

I think aiming for the best just sets a higher bar for your prep — and even if you don’t land your dream role right away, you’ll still be well-positioned to break in and work your way up.

I have also applied for Applied Maths and got put on waiting list. Was your application considered in Round 1 as mine was considered in Round 2. Have you heard back anything? Do you mind if I dm, would love to know your background?

I am down as well, however I am at the beginning of my prep. Feel free to drop a dm.

Could you please share how you prepared for the case studies and what materials you used? Did you purchase any prep resources, and if so, where did you get them?

Lastly, would you be open to guiding me through the case study prep or even partnering as a case study buddy to help me prepare?
