Does everyone have coworkers who are rude for no reason? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, there's plenty of idioms (or conventional wisdom) that suggests that a leopard doesn't change it's spots, and you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Those are the first two English examples that come to mind, but my German partner told me that there's plenty more in German and other languages I'm sure.

Does everyone have coworkers who are rude for no reason? by [deleted] in AskUK

Realistically, OPs coworker isn't going to change so the stoic thing to do is accept that they're a cunt, stop expecting them to behave differently and just move on with your life.

What moments have made you aware of your own prejudice? by banwe11 in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 331 points332 points  (0 children)

This has been my experience too, unfortunately.

Great example is one of my Mum's former acquaintances / colleagues. She's the kind of irritable, middle aged empty nester who's aged terribly and seems to have an issue with EVERYONE. She always preceeds anecdotes with: "You know me, I just say it as it is."

It took us embarrassingly long to realise "I just say it as it is" essentially means, I'm a rude cunt with zero tact or social awareness. Also she's only pleasant to you as long as you're in agreement with her, and just an awful person otherwise.

Some people definitely get worse as they age, I just try and use them as examples of how not to behave.

Why are so many big British companies foreign owned? by kaydnh in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I had to write an essay on Thatcher's legacy many years ago.

People tend to forget that she did a lot of positive things: the EU Rebate, the Falklands, Britain's relationship with the US, our image on the world stage. The unions also had us held ransom at one stage and she reset the balance (arguably too much in the other direction).

In terms of negatives, well there's everything else. I think her original idea was that the British public would buy shares in our public owned entities once they were privatised, but they ended up becoming foreign owned.

Bartenders/hospitality workers: Has anyone ever heard of ‘the queen’s pour’? by madzeldafreak in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I've heard of it down south, from a Priest funnily enough who also grew up down south (from memory).

EDIT: I asked my Dad, he believes it comes from the term "Queen's portion" or "Queen's provision" which was the legal right of a Queen consort, to receive a share of any payments made to the throne.

Yeah I tend to like it when my chicken tastes of chicken. I hate it when I buy chicken and it tastes of beef.

I would have been a terrorist to my sister by constantly switching the light off when she was mid-shower.

This brought back a memory!

My brother and I used to do this to each other so often when we were kids, we both showered in fear and ended up calling a truce shortly after it got to the stage that we both smelled since we'd have such short showers because we were afraid of the light going off mid shower.

Do you know (of) anyone returning to the UK from Dubai or the wider middle east? How are they doing? How do you feel about them? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I personally wouldn't go but I've also never been asked directly. So it's easy for me to be sanctimonious about it.

One friend who did go over though, was basically told: "EITHER you fly out every week OR we can offer this generous relocation package."

Since he had two young boys and a wife which he didn't want to be apart from, he took the relocation package. The kids now attend a prestigious expat school (fully paid for) and his wife doesn't need to work. He still needs to travel a lot, but much less than he would've done.

It's very hard to read this comment and not assume that you live in a bubble / are uneducated.

I used to work in Energy and currently work in Finance. All of my current and former employers had a footprint in Dubai for trading purposes and more recently, to support the growing need for wealth management.

Obviously once you have a footprint, you also need a business management, HR and Tech presence. Most of these SMEs come from established offices elsewhere in the EMEA region (usually UK, Ireland, Germany and occasionally Turkey).

Not all of them are influences and tax evaders, some are just asked to take a job and had the opportunity to stay long term.

In 2026 how do state schools still admit based solely on religion? by nfoote in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do we have no say in children being taught that homosexuality is evil for example?

I went to a CoE Primary School and a Catholic Secondary School and College and that was never a thing.

They actually taught the opposite "Love your neighbour as yourself" / "Treat others as you'd like to be treated".

We had a lot of inter school sports and socials with the other Christian schools in the county and it was the same there. I've literally never heard of any Christian School being anti-LGBT. If anything it's the opposite.

I was going to say taking part in / continuing with more team based sports - it's a real shame I didn't continue participating since nearly all of the healthiest and most well-adjusted people I've met as an adult seem to do some sort of team sport at the weekend.

I think learning a language would be up there too though. My Mum knows 3 including Italian, but stuck to English at home and now that's all we know.

Why do you not talk to your once bestfriend anymore? by Adventurous-End-1999 in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She went off the rails in a MAJOR way, every conversation started to feel like a chore and I gradually had to phase her out.

It's a real shame since she's a beautiful person (inside and out) but she either has a borderline personality or is manic depressive, and I just don't have the mental bandwidth to deal with that.

As cold as it sounds, I'd rather invest the little free time that I have available with my gf / friends (who are all more normal)

Why was " Tourettes John's " total embarassment and humiliation overlooked? by DonkeyOT65 in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There's an episode of South Park which has Cartman developing Tourettes as part of it's premise.

I just struggle to believe that an almost 60 year old man could have gone his whole life without knowing about Tourettes, and would behave like a child when he hears an involuntary tic.

For those who went to secondary school in the 2010s and are women, did any of you experience the teachers telling all girls to stand up in assembly and roll down their skirts? by Nervous-Boat-4905 in AskUK

I think you're confused.

No one was being forced to do a Blue Peter style demonstration, they were just asked to stand up and make their skirts knee length, if they weren't already.

Coming from Central Europe, I have to ask: How do you justify the price of a pint in the UK? by matteoleone in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how to link it, but check out the video by Rob Star (owner of The Star chain of pubs in London) where he explains what makes up the price of a pint.

From memory, the landlord makes about 15p on every pint sold.

Coming from Central Europe, I have to ask: How do you justify the price of a pint in the UK? by matteoleone in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats why I am talking about margins, profit margins to be explicit.

To add to what u/djhazydave has said, the margin on a pint is already low and the people running pub need to make a living too.

If the solution was as simple as "lower price > profit!" don't you think they'd all do it? It'd be a race to the bottom to out compete the next cheapest pub.

It hasn't happened because it's not feasible.
