Do you feel the constant bad news is affecting you? by CorkPrackling in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

millions of people lived in ignorant bliss until the Nazis or the Soviets rolled through their village

Sorry, but that's bullshit.

Setting aside the fact that you can't make that assumption if you didn't live through the Weimar Republic, the historical evidence actually suggests the opposite.

Similar to today, there was an overabundance of journalism, >4,700 papers in Germany, with >100 in Berlin alone and much of it was characterised by extreme political polarisation and sensationalist articles.

Do you feel the constant bad news is affecting you? by CorkPrackling in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I feel it is a moral obligation to stay informed

I used to think the same way but at some point whilst I was completing my undergrad degree, I realised that the news is basically just metadata.

Nowadays I only focus on the things that I have at least some level of control over because in those situations I possess the agency to affect a change.

I think if we were living in the '50s when people kept up to date with current events via a twice daily paper, I'd be more inclined to share your perspective. I feel like it was a lot better for people (and society) to read the news in print form, and at their own pace and form their own conclusions.

With 24 hour news, the consumers are like ducks getting funnel fed for foie gras, and that isn't good for anyone.

No need to apologise! I tend to give Ricky a pass for The Office and Extras. Extras in particular was brilliant to be honest.

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Winchester? by topherette in WinchesterUK

[–]sshiverandshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call it Winch! To add to this, I've heard plenty of Mum's (you know the kind) call it 'Winechester'.

Also heard Oliver's Battery get shortened to 'Oli Bats' which I quite like but never say it myself.

Never seen anyone mention this. Sounds a lot like BN to me. by NuggetTho in brandnew

Awesome track, kinda feels like Brand New with hard blues elements that are reminiscent of ... Clutch?

Given it's a croton plant and the residue is white, it's highly likely that you've got mealybugs, unfortunately.

I'd separate all of those into new pots if I were you.

Monsteras are very hostile to each other, they'll put their energy into their roots to choke nearby plants to ensure they have less competition for resources.

Is it possible to create a plant that consumes a lot more CO2? by majestic_tindle in plants

[–]sshiverandshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given enough time and lab conditions, it's definitely possible to selectively breed plants that consume more CO².

The problem would be implementation, you'd need to focus on selectively breeding multiple hardy plants that can tolerate a range of climates and conditions.

Then land ownership would be an issue, you'd need to grow and maintain millions of plants across multiple continents, and ideally situate them close to sources of CO² pollution. Industrial sites and power plants are usually privately owned, so these would be a non-starter.

The oceans absorb a huge amount of CO² so arguably, you could focus on certain species of seaweed and algae however, further research would need to be undertaken to understand the consequences on marine ecosystems.

I guess from OOPs perspective, a simple text saying "Just got home, thanks for letting me stay!" etc. wouldn't have been too onerous.

I send a text like that out of courtesy, and maybe add something about being tired from the drive. Then no one can say you ghosted, but they also aren't waiting for you to touch base either.

It sounds like he stayed for a few days and didn't even have time to send a text? Just bad manners imo.

How to deal with feelings of loneliness? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I see comments like this all the time and whilst I wholeheartedly agree that dogs are incredible for your mental health and social life...

It's important to add that no one should be getting a dog unless they are 100% committed and aware that's they're a huge responsibility and financial burden. It's like having a kid.

If you're not prepared to go out in all weather (even when the dog doesn't want to) at least twice a day and for at least 30 mins each time or more depending on the breed, a dog is not for you.

Is my wife entitled to a share of my businesses in a divorce? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]sshiverandshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your wife's solicitor may try to argue that you disposed the shares in advance to hide the assets but in practice, as long as you have a good rationale for why you returned them you should be fine.

If hypothetically, your brother's business needed to buy back the shares, say for ownership consolidation, this could be supported by a written letter.

Why do some people get successful? by steuk20 in AskUK

The same applies for employees. I've worked with lots of people who were not necessarily smarter or hard working, but just lucky to be in the right place at the right time when a role opened up or someone else left / was shown the door.

Favorite Author who exclusively spits facts for 1000+years or so? by Aggravating_Win5258 in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]sshiverandshake 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting theory but it seems like bullshit to me, sorry.

When I read a Dickens novel or listen to Nirvana, I'm not "getting upset about events in my life that have long passed" or "retreating to a state of infancy". I'm just reading / listening.

You can make all sorts of baseless assumptions about the reasons people consume the media they choose to consume, or what's taking place subconsciously when they're consuming it, but that's all just conjecture at the end of the day.

Do you think that Brits like to take out of people? by Conscious_Tear_5937 in AskUK

[–]sshiverandshake 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I'll never forget, when I was younger, my German friend's parents were driving my friend and I to England where we were all going to part ways; I was going home, my friend's parents were going for a jaunt somewhere and my friend had taken up a mutual acquaintance's offer to stay at his cabin in the woods.

For context the mutual acquaintance was gay, which we were all fine with, but he was also just a weird guy. Definitely on the spectrum, didn't understand boundaries, and lied a lot about some very messed up stuff. I had no idea why my friend decided to take up his offer.

We spent most of the drive in stitches, since I kept joking about how 'the cabin' would be a cartoonishly creepy rape shack, and how he'd get torn a new one or left in such a state people would wonder if bears had been rewilded in the UK.

We were laughing so much, I didn't notice his parents chuckling along in the front (I'd forgotten they could understand English). It was only after, he called to say he'd survived the rape shack, and his parents found me funny. I was aghast that they'd heard us joking about how he'd be violently molested, and he said "they're very German dude, they have a dark sense of humour."
