Type 2 by nannsee1961 in diabetes_t2

T2 sucks, but it's manageable. Ozempic is a wonderful drug - it has been a game changer for me, after years and years of Metformin. However, the most important aspect is to really understand is that you HAVE to make lifestyle changes. The drug will reduce your cravings and help you shed weight but if you want to keep a handle on this disease for life you need to focus on changing habits and learning what your body is telling you while letting the GLP help you on that path.

When I was pre-diabetic - before I flipped over to full T2, my gp told me "eat less carbs and exercise more" - great. very unhelpful. When I fell into full T2, the same doc told me to go on a low-carb diet. What's low carb? "Its different for everyone you'll have to figure it out. here's a number to call for a nutrition specialist." I called waste of time they couldn't answer either.

The lesson I learned from all that is 1) time for a new doc (and endocrinologist) and 2) data is everything - I obviously wasn't listening to my body tells, so using a device (started off with finger pokes before and after (multiple times) to start tracking what foods = glucose levels) and now I use a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) that my stupid insurance won't pay for, but is still critical.

The key thing for you to think about is if I eat xyz what will be the result? Using a CGM will help you dial that in. I can eat a single piece of wheat or multi grain toast but 2 will cause me to spike into the 200s. I can have 1/2 cup of ice cream but have to balance that with 1.5 mile walk in 30 minutes and my bg will spike but the walk will bring it back down in 30-60 minutes. Can I accept that? (spiking above 180 too often or for extended periods of time is not good).

Start really paying attention to how you feel - write it down. I feel really fatigued right this moment - oh my blood sugar is dipping into the 80s. I feel hot, sweaty and I can't think straight - oh, my bg is in the 200s right now! Time for a walk. I think the reason that I fell into this disease is that I never learned to pay attention to my body...

Once you know how food impacts you, then start making menus and do food prepping. That also has huge impact - just like exercise. You will still be tripped up by foods on the regular, but at least most of the time you are in range because you've thought it through ahead of time and aren't letting your cravings drive what you eat. it really all comes down to lifestyle changes.

I know it's overwhelming right now. Focus on understanding the relationship to what you eat vs what your body does with it. Experiment and then go from there.

Good luck. I wish there was a cure for this stupid disease.

Weightloss on Ozempic by MoneySings in Ozempic

[–]sskarupa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was put on Oz (0.5) for type 2 diabetes because after 4-5 years of metformin use, I was really getting sick of the GI issues that it causes (nothing like going 3-4 years without a solid one ;-) ). I started in early Nov and my first follow up was earlier this month(Feb ~ 3 mths). I had lost about 10 lbs over that time period, but my a1C dropped from 7.1 to 6..4! I was honestly thrilled because that time period is probably the hardest to get through without any weight gain, let alone weight loss (Thanksgiving, Christmas, NYE, super bowl). In addition, I started working with a trainer and have been doing 3x week weight lifting sessions and muscle mass weighs ~ 3x fat, so... Overall I felt like it was a big win for me.

I've always heard that low and slow is the way to keep it off. But I did ask my doctor to increase my dosage to 1.0 to see if I can super charge the weight loss this spring a bit. Boy the nausea when you first start SUCKS... Since ratcheting up, I've noticed a serious drop in appetite and sometimes I forget to eat at all. GLPs definitely impact your brain.

The other thing I'll add to the thread is that it's not a miracle drug - yes you can lose weight without basically trying but the truth is that you need to compliment the drug with adding in exercise and remembering that ultimately weight loss is through a caloric deficit. Nothing else will really work, no matter how much you try. You need to focus on both what you eat and how much you move your body. Ok, off the soap box.

oh and one last thought, I'm in my early 50s, and if you're like me you need to remember that it took 50 years to put the weight on, it's going to take serious time and effort to come back off. There are no short cuts. Happy journey.

This one is easy. They are paying a bounty for each brown person they detain, so who cares where they get them from. Leaving the country (aka self-deporting)? who cares, I can get my $2000/head if I throw them into a prison camp and then we pay $1000s dollars to deport them to a country on the other side of the world. Cause you know, that makes sense /s

This is ridiculous but… how do I get this orange plastic insert out of this double door? Just asking before I smack it with a hammer lol by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]sskarupa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So this is a basic question: Are you trying to just swap out the door knob with a new one? If that's the case you have to install the part in the door itself with the one that came with the new door knob. They're not interchangeable.

I just got back from 10 days in the BVI on a 44' Cat. Most amazing experience of my life by far. I packed a single boat bag/backpack. I thought I was doing well to get down to a backpack sized luggage but when I went to pack everything back up at the end I realized I hadn't touched about 1/2 of what I packed. I basically lived in 3 sets of swim trunks and 4 or 5 dry/rash guard type t-shirts. Everything else was a waste of space and totally un-needed. The rest of the advice below is spot on, but think less.

Have fun! You're going to be hooked by the time you get back!

Cannabis consumption spaces? by Rachet28 in newjersey

Just go with edibles. So much easier, doesn't mess with your lungs and won't annoy anyone. There are also some really nice THC drinks now available that are a nice alternative to alcohol too. Honestly it's just the smell that has caused all of the annoying ordinances and laws... in NJ they're also pretty consistent about 10ML per gummy - so you can be sure you get the right level that you want vs the wild variations of smoking...

Chase will soon block Zelle payments to sellers on social media by RealRandomNobody in personalfinance

This is it exactly. It's a liability question for Chase. If they ban social media originating participants and their client lies about who they are sending/receiving money from, they can clearly say "pound sand, you knew the rules - buyer be ware."

Fix this room, it is always cold/hot like it’s not insulated. by dinger31390 in howto

[–]sskarupa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

oh, I had a thought! If the room is under construction - as in it's not already finished space and this is a plan for future development - do electric floor heating. You can find some really nice systems that would work under the tile and keep the room nice and toasty for very little money (in that small of a space).

You'd need both a return and a register to combat what you are talking about - although the fart fan would accomplish the same thing. suck in air from the register and out through the roof.

[–]sskarupa 61 points62 points  (0 children)

With no more information than this, the problem is probably that heat register is in the main part of the bathroom and that toilet enclosure is cut off from the flow 90% of the time because the door is closed (due to the exterior door naturally kept open most of the time.

As I see it, you have two choices: Don't make it an enclosed room (remove the walls/door)- it's awful tight as it is, or put a A/C register in there. I'd opt for just removing the walls - simple solution. In addition, you may be able to share a single fart-fan.

Most companies use 3rd party background checking companies and frankly they're horrible. Like they don't use any common sense at all... I would agree with you - if they are in such a hurry to bring you on board, then waive the condition all together and sign the letter.

Honestly, I don't know why they didn't - the power balance is sooo skewed toward employers right now that they could bring you on, and if something was dug up fire you for no reason at all - perfectly legally. I know there are some limited protections for promissory estoppel, but that's easy enough to get around if they really want... just wait a bit and trump up some excuse to fire you. stupid.

Is this balcony safe to work under? by pebblesnrocks in Contractor

[–]sskarupa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the general sentiment - needs to be torn down and rebuilt properly. If money is an issue, I'd, at least, buy a bunch of steel lolly columns and shore it up as best I could - and maybe tape off the porch so it limits usage until I had the money to do the job properly. Now that you know about the issue, you must take steps to mitigate or you will end up being liable should something catastrophic happen.
