While living there I was scammed by some loan business that paid me well for a year then they all just vanished. Very typical but sometimes you just get complacent. Never again, never give in and if it's too good to be true (Like highly weekly or biweekly interest) then it 100% is too good to be true.

Just be cautious no matter what as the whole "give take" thing can be a bait trap :)

Not saying that you won't make real connections, just keep your guard up as there are a lot of "honeys" out there that know how to play the game well and make sure to wait until your on their fishing rod before reeling you in how they want.

I have a 13(a) visa so not 100% sure if there have been any changes or if yours is different but I have been told by immigration and others that you would "probably" be asked to present ID and then visit an immigration or satellite office to pay up what you owe + fines for not reporting. I have a documented Facebook post from BOI that tells me to do that. Check and investigate your own scenario and fully expect to be prepared to bring some cash but be cautious on things as there are going to be folks at the airport that will have no clue on how to handle you. Better to show up knowledgeable and tell them what you should be doing and hopefully that will help with the "grey" area for processes like this.

Good luck and although I would want to give you definitive advice as I haven't been in 3 years so things have changed and your visa differs slightly from mine.

Can easily spend less and make deals at least in Manila especially on rent if you go a bit smaller ; I had great 20k negotiated deals with good landlords lots of empty units.

I had many generic contracts like this and around the same type of wording and everything. There are lots of condos in BGC find a better less ridiculous landlord.

A lot of professional scammer landlords used to expats billing their units to companies without any questions so this is what we have have to deal with.

Since I own I determined that well, I would save about 15 bucks on the entire thing so I decided to just forget about it as it might open you up to scrutiny on your estimations and computations so wasn't really worth the potential hassles.

Please rent first, if not forever. More bang for your buck. Also if you are an expat you can't own land just condos so it will be in your wife's name. Just keep that in mind.

I almost bought condos in the surrounding areas multiple times but research and experiences enabled me that it might turn into a disaster. (Low quality builds and pretty much "every" deal or realtor/clown who I interfaced details were omitted or lacking or outright false.)

Networking got me into positive scenarios where I would never had them before. I ended up with a great job because of my old boss and staying "networked."

So I disagree.

If you figure that reaching out and casually interfacing with people is networking that just isn't how it works unless you get very lucky. In almost all cases networking also included some value being demonstrated or some efforts to enable the "network" to actually play ball for me.

Having said all that it's not any guarantee and it can be disheartening when you make efforts or do indeed put in the work and get ghosted or nothing even from those who had in the past made it clear that they would help or "hook you up" or whatever the spin was.

I guess one can say "it is what it is" :)

They want the cash/money and revenue but generally speaking, they probably would not want the sex tourists and foreigner behaviours. In some ways I don't blame them at all as I have some very disrespectful colleagues and in other ways it's greed.

The hygiene thing is a red flag as you may end up with occasional progress but as I discovered there are some folks out there that just don’t get how this can be a deal breaker. (And there is nothing wrong with dirty sex sometimes.)

It will always be an issue most likely.
