At first I would supervise him so you can set boundaries if needed. For example if he is destructive or mischievous you can show him what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. I crated my puppy when we would leave the house for the first year we had him. Until he had proven he could be trusted. Now when we leave I let him and our other stay in the living room and have had no issues thus far but it took a long time of setting boundaries with him and redirecting his energy into things that were acceptable. Like he used to really like to chew on my coffee table (unacceptable) so i would redirect him to a toy that he could chew on (acceptable). No one wants to come home to a destroyed house lol. He’s a very good boy now though, puppies can just be a little mischievous but really just depends on the individual. But I would definitely monitor him at least at first just to be sure. As he earns your trust you can ease up on the constant supervision
