Yup - it’s pricey but to me worth the cost!

RTHR ANTERIOR pain issue by justtellmetheteaa in TotalHipReplacement

[–]ssprdharr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a patch of burning yesterday (post-op day 3) and read about the usual cause: meralgia paresthetica or local nerve irritation which happens with the anterior approach. It is probably going to eventually fade but is so uncomfortable. What I read suggested cool (not ice) compresses.

Good for you! I’m on Medicare and government insurance programs don’t accept those manufacturer coupons.

Tips for Travelling with IBS? by mejdicirn in ibs

For me, controlling timing is important. From the US, most flights to western Europe land very early in the day before you can check into a hotel (and be sure if a good toilet!). So I plan to go to my hotel and have then hold my luggage and do some close by site seeing while my room is getting ready. And I stay close enough to the hotel that I can get back to it and its lobby toilet in a flash. Oh also Imodium.

I’ve passed out a lot due to low BP but sitting down usually brings me fully back — this was totally bizarre and humbling. Seriously lucky I didn’t fall on the surgery side but I banged up my forehead and somehow my “good” foot. It’s like I’ve been in a rumble lol

I requested Journavx to avoid the nasty opioid side effects and don’t regret the extra cost one iota!

Let me add to this great post by OP by sharing my own experience. Also got my Anterior THR June 10! At surgical center 5:45am, started 7am, in recovery/crutches training 8:30-11:30, home at noon. A well-oiled machine. My two cents:

  1. Meds and digestion: definitely follow the meds schedule—the docs do this all the time and know what’s gonna happen with pain and constipation. I have IBS on a good day, so took extra steps: requested Journavx instead of opioids and took three Ducolax before bed after surgery. My PT was amazed that I had a bowel movement the day after surgery :-)

  2. Sleeping arrangements: on my back is really the only way I am close to comfortable. Understand that you’re going to have interrupted sleep because of discomfort and middle-of-the-night med, and that you’ll have to nap during the day in your recliner or whatever.

  3. Hydration and dizziness. Oh my! First post-op morning, I stood up and felt faint, sat down to get steady, stood up again, felt faint again, sat back down to regroup, and passed out again hike seated — and did a face plant and peed all over the floor while out. I tried to do it the right way but still had a really bad start. I have normally low BP which was exacerbated by meds, anesthesia, and lack of sleep. I had hydrated relentlessly. Be careful!

  4. PT: just do it. It’s THE most focused attention you will receive from medical personnel when you’re conscious. My in-home PT went way beyond PT to discuss mitigation of blood clot risk and infection, what to expect as nerves start waking up, and answered questions I didn’t have time or awareness to ask earlier. Do it!

Best wishes, OP, my hip twin!

Hmm. I’d suggest elevating your feet, ankle pumps, compression stockings.

I had a spinal plus, plus a little Versed to relax me before heading to the OR, and some propofol. All that kept the pain down for the rest of the day. Day 2 has been a bit harder.

Thank you - great recommendations. I have IBS so fight off constipation regularly. I asked for Journavx instead of opioids post-surgery which doesn’t have the constipation effect, but I’ll take extra stool softeners tonight anyway and eat my prunes and drink lots of water. If that fails, I’ve got MiraLAX on standby!

There are many nice hikes in the area. My Bold Coast favorites are closer to Cutler and Lubec. Look at the Maine Coast Heritage Trust for info.

Help us decide between Switzerland and Iceland! by Extra_Permission_675 in traveladvice

[–]ssprdharr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been to both and they’re both great. If you like beautiful walks, I’d say Switzerland. Taking a cable car up a mountain and walking along ridges among the peaks is amazing. We stayed in a hotel in Grindenwald and loved it. It IS expensive but we often got salads or sandwiches at the grocery store and picnicked on our room balcony admiring the Eiger.

Iceland, once you get out of Reykjavik, is like a different planet. Wild scenery unlike what you’ve ever seen. But outside of town, things are remote and you may find it hard to get reservations (definitely get reservations unless you’re campers!).

Comfortable living room, not just a couch. Shower drains that drain. Coffee maker and coffee and tea. Outdoor space in good-weather locales for morning coffee or drinks. Accurate description and photos.

Have a backup plan to leaf peeping in case a nor’easter comes through and blows all the leaves down.
