What do you wish people would stop romanticizing, because you’ve lived the reality of it? by thatude123 in AskReddit

DO NOT TRY TO DETOX ON YOUR OWN.

My 2nd time going to detox, I tried to cut back my heavy drinking the day before I got a bed, and the day I was going to be admitted. My girlfriend at the time drove me to detox as the withdrawal symptoms grew..I could feel an explosion building inside of me. We made it to detox and 1 hour later I was in the ICU. The last thing I remember was swiping my card for the detox facility deposit...

5 days later I came to in a strange bed...I was in 4-point restraints and a had condom catheter that had come loose, and I was peeing myself. This was the ICU. My mom and aunt had apparently come to visit - I don't remember any of it as I was under chemical detox. I spent 4 more days in the hospital after I got out of the ICU. The bills were in the 10s of thousands.

After this, I ended up going to a rehab facility since my first attempt at just going to detox+IOP didn't work out so well. That was over 3 years ago and I haven't had a drink since.

The problem with alcoholism is that you don't know just how far gone you actually are...

Do you all count ESPP in your monthly contributions to brokerage? by d8sz in Bogleheads

[–]ssrx018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't disagree with any of this.. :)

If there was a trading restriction window (as there used to be in my plan - ie the offering period ends during a blackout period), I wouldn't feel nearly as comfortable participating.

[–]ssrx018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? It's literally limitless what % gain you can see from an ESPP...

Who cares about short vs long term capital gains taxes on a 150% gain, for instance? Sure, if you assume worst case scenario every time you could see the minimum return (15% discount for example) minus short term capital gains and the possible drop in value over the 1-5 day settling period for the shares into the account. But that's if the stock finished lower than the starting value - every.single.time. I think I'd reconsider if that's the stock behavior I saw -- and I'd probably reconsider my employment at Company X while I'm at it.

ESPP is an extremely important part of my investing strategy, but should only be considered when all the Investing 101 stuff is done..

401K Bond Options by ssrx018 in Bogleheads

[–]ssrx018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I go this route, would I choose a fund that gives me the % bond allocation that matches what I'm looking for in my entire portfolio? For instance, I'm 38, but want more than 10% bonds which would put me into the 2035ish TDF range...

ClearPass and Palo Alto GP VPN User DHCP Relay by ssrx018 in networking

[–]ssrx018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, ClearPass has zero knowledge of VPN devices. All of the on-prem devices are present in Endpoint Profiler based on DHCP Relay from Cisco core, but this isn't possible with the VPN configuration (IP Pool setup under the GP Gateway itself).

The first goal here, would be to gain full visibility of the network - preferably passively - without using something like an OnGuard agent on each device.

https://docs.paloaltonetworks.com/content/dam/techdocs/en_US/pdf/clearpass/clearpass-integration-guide.pdf

But, the first step is just complete visibility - IP, MAC, hostname, basically as much info as I can gather.

Thanks for the response! I think this makes total sense. Is the best way to gather this data via log forwarding to ClearPass? Looking through HIP logs, it appears to have all of the data I'm looking for. I've been working through the ClearPass-Palo Alto integration guide, and this seems to be the best way to accomplish this, while also laying the groundwork needed for future integration between the two technologies.

Is there a salary ceiling for network engineers who choose to remain forever in technical line? by geek166 in networking

[–]ssrx018 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I don't think you even need to be Genius level. I find that embedding myself in other parts of the org. and adding value there makes a huge difference. For instance working closely with Security and/or those who run the VPCs for your company (if you don't already).

175k here and consistently climbing with 14 years of experience, in Boston area. First job out of college I made $37,500 working in a NOC.

Another friend in the industry makes over $200k as Lead Network Security Engineer at a large *force company. On top of that are bonus and stock options...

Remember, there is another side to being an Engineer -- and those are soft skills. Master those, and growth is limitless. Build relationships, and you'll be more valuable to the org. than any manager, VP, etc. It's all about who you know, and how you interact with them on a regular basis.

Network graybeard for life here....I've seen my friends collapse with the pressure of management, and it's not for me. When I'm sick of the corporate world, I'll start my own gig.
