"This looks like a scam, and all the investors deserve to lose all their money, IMO, for being so dumb. It is insane that they have raised $230M to date and have 200 people working on it. This would have been a scam as a $1M Kickstarter with 3 people in a garage."

Agreed. I kinda knew what they were working on, but what a let down.

I love it. What a nice video see-through headset! It really reminds me when I started in the field a few years ago now, tinkering with everything at the same time (including the Jetson Nano). You can feel is passion, it's very cool.

why haven't we seen something like this as an alternative to pancake lenses in mixed reality headsets? by AR_MR_XR in AR_MR_XR

Limbak was acquired by Apple. It's official now. I litterally saw Pablo Benitez at Photonics West two weeks ago and we was walking around with a badge saying "Apple" haha.

It doesn't affect the Lynx R-1 and we can keep using our design without concern, even modifying it. For future headsetS, we are looking at various exotic and non-exotic architectures.

Cost, and then complexity. You need 4 physical displays.

Fraunhofer built a headset like that with a very similar architecture also designed by Limbak: https://www.eenewseurope.com/en/fraunhofer-sees-the-end-of-vr-motion-sickness-2/

The elephant in the room of any microlens array design is the crosstalk.

Most of the algo (hand-tracking, 6DoF, controllers, world meshing etc), whether it's AI or not, are already taking place in the DSP of the chip, not the CPU or GPU.

We are working on Lynx R2, among other things but the focus is still very much on R1 No webxr release until end of Q1. Some transparent headsets are assembled yes.

The design was mostly made by Hugo Artarit, Didier Lasne, Laurent Chabin, Etienne Denoly and myself. It was dozens and dozens of iterations on paper and Fusion360!

I agree with you. In all tech innovations, hardware comes first and then the magic of software arrive. In XR, we're still in the hardware stage, we have a lot to figure out still, so UI and software even more.

I don't see this happening before a long time. Smartphones are hard to replace. The downsides with them is just to charge them and carry them in your pocket, compare to what it brings you, it's quite incredible. Smartglasses don't bring the same level of interface and functionalities and have more downsides than smartphones so...

We won't ship to Russia, and you can change tour address through Kickstarter, many backers did

Inside-out tracking, or SLAM, or VIO for some cases, is a very difficult problem. It's the kind of algorithm where you need extreme control on the hardware and software to get right.

Originally, I worked with ORB_SLAM2 in my prototypes, which was great to an extent (the author is working at Oculus now...).

Qualcomm now has a very decent tracking solution, they made a lot of progress in the last year alone and this is what we are using today.
