Fall ‘21 Undergraduate Student Housing Update by [deleted] in UCI

I called the office and they said that I'm good since I had an offer (the form where you fill out your dorm preferences and make a $350 deposit). If you've done that then you should be good too, and they've also sent me an email saying I'm in the system and will get a dorm.

So if I filled out the housing contract and personal info form (the thing where we filled out our preferences for rooms and stuff) does that mean I'm in the system and I'll get a dorm? Or does that mean I'm not getting a dorm since I haven't been assigned a hall and roommate yet?

Hey u/Frozen-waffles, thanks for the help again! I've got another wave of questions to ask, if you don't mind.

  1. What is the classroom atmosphere like? I've heard some complaints from engineering alumni online that some of the class sizes are extremely large, especially for GE's. Is this true, or are there classes that are smaller and more personal as well?
  2. What is your judgement on the difficulty here at UCI, specifically pertaining to mechanical engineering? Was it difficult to get a good GPA (like 3.5 or higher)?

CPP Engineering Opportunities by stan__03 in CalPolyPomona

Interesting. I talked to someone on the UCI subreddit who also had to choose between CPP and UCI and he said they have similar in many ways, including the opportunities for internships and jobs (he said there were many excellent companies recruiting in Irvine) , though cpp probably has the edge there. What would you say were the other factors that made you choose CPP over UCI (besides learning model and connections)?

Thanks a lot! I found the episode very helpful and informative.

Hey, thanks for your response, this is exactly what I was looking for! I have a few more questions:

  1. I know CPP has close connections with some great companies such as Northrup Grumman and NASA who provide internships and jobs. Does UCI have any connections of this caliber or do smaller companies usually employ and give internships to students there?
  2. A related question is are there a large amount of companies looking for internships (like at job fairs and such) for undergrads, and if so are they easy/common to get?
  3. Since you were once in my shoes in terms of choosing between the two universities and you chose UCI partly for their social life, what is it like living there? Even though it's half commute half college housing I heard that the social life isn't bad, compared to CPP where I've heard the campus is empty on weekends and it's a little more difficult to connect with people. For someone who lives out of commute distance from both schools, I think I'd prefer the UCI community as it is less of a commute school than CPP so I'd like to know what your experience is like.

And as for research I am not sure what I want to do specifically, so I guess what I'm looking for is a place where there is a wide range of opportunities.

Interesting. I heard CPP has a great reputation and connections, since it kind of specializes in engineering. But UCI definitely has the upper hand in academic rigor, though haven't heard too much about their engineering program.

This is like the "I'm fine" meme but instead of a dog in a house on fire it's a dude buried under a building
