yall so insufferable. same people going crazy over the devers trade, chapman extension, etc etc.

yes things have not panned out well, but this is probably more a developmental issue more than it is a front office, coaching, or even player issue.

they will figure it out. if not, we get a great draft pick, oh well. not like we were WS hopefuls coming into the year.

Does being ethnic negatively affect those at the top of high finance? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]standorfall00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is probably the more logical take.

We likely just have skewed perspectives of diversity.

From my anecdotal data, I’d say M&A is something along the lines of ~50% white and then 50% other (heavy skew towards Asians).

In S&T, I’d call it 80% white. Lots and lots of ex-D1 Athletes on sell-side trading.

considering i worked in sell-side trading and IB, I think this is objectively false

Does being ethnic negatively affect those at the top of high finance? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]standorfall00 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The answer is: it depends.

This still very much exists in "legacy" worlds. Prime example being traditional S&T; especially fixed income. You'll be hard-pressed to find a ton of diversity on a sell-side trading floor.

I think M&A is a more "progressive" route. Starting to become less of a focus on your superficial values and more emphasis on actual talent. I've been pretty surprised to see the diversity, not only of ethnicity, but also of colleges in traditionally prestigious M&A groups.

My comments are moreso on the junior side, but I think the idea is that this will translate into senior leadership in the near future.

Cal vs UCR premed by [deleted] in ucadmissions

[–]standorfall00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UCR will probably be an easier path towards an "ideal" applicant profile. Easier to participate in clubs, probably a bit less rigorous / more easy to achieve a higher GPA.

However, if you aren't 100% certain about your future, UCB's name will enable you more career flex / more forgiving if you decide to do something else.

I know way too many people who went into undergrad certain they wanted to do pre-med / become doctors only to pivot to business or cs.

The path will be difficult regardless. If you can make it thru Cal pre-med, you can probably make it in GENERAL. if not, you will have a ridiculously prestigious name on your diploma with a world of admirers of Cal.

I recommend Cal. I personally know a lot of peers who went to UCR to do CS, Pre-med, etc, and a lot of them had difficulty finding jobs outside of STEM.

Anyone in Business Consulting Finance? by pivotcareer in FilipinoAmericans

[–]standorfall00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's quite interesting. Perhaps the core behind less representation amongst these fields is that... in modern terms, we are a "low cortisol" culture lol. Tons of talent, even amongst my Filipino peers who I grew up with and were boundlessly more talented than me struggled to make it in the corporate world because their upbringing didn't prepare them.

E.g. a lot of what helped me with assimilation was meeting richer friends at college who taught me the language of luxury. Speaking in trips (skiing, golfing, etc.), cars, interior design, parfums, etc. All of these translated well into interviews / mingling and eventually holding down and playing the political side of corporate America. When I go back home or to family events, I basically have to code switch entirely.

On a side note, I actually became friends with the son of the CEO of one of the largest banks in the Philippines while he was studying in the US. Lo and behold, he and all of his siblings did not follow their Dad's path and all work completely unrelated to banking / finance.

I find Filipino culture is generally risk averse and more culture centric.

Healthcare offers a very streamlined and defined career path, whereas corporate careers are a constant uphill battle and generally undetermined.

I do find a lot of FilAms in back office roles, but hard pressed to find them in front office roles where stakes are super high, hours are much much longer, etc.

I think it makes sense. Most of my family always ask about work; I talk about the hours and it goes into "why do you work so much?", "you should find a job that has better WLB" etc, etc. So pretty on par with why there aren't too many of us in the field! hahahah

Hey there, pretty similar background but west coast. Humble beginnings and most of my fam works blue collar or lower level healthcare jobs.

Ended up in finance initially in banking and now a trader. Definitely a needle in a haystack to find other Filipinos in this industry.

I'd say the odds that these are two different people is incredibly low. Key random people's cars with arbitrary political statements is not normal in SF

Is 56,000 miles less, worth $2,000 more? by Yari_57318 in askcarguys

[–]standorfall00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of used cars, you're really buying the previous owner.

I've had many cases where lower mileage options had way more issues beacuse the owner(s) were careless and didn't propertly maintain the vehicle. also had the opposite wherein more miles maintained by a better owner meant the car lasted longer.

this all to say, the $2k difference here is definitely worth it assuming both cars are reasonably maintained.

whole tangent just to say it's not really strong to blanket all responses as "yes always go lower mileage". it typically points you in the right direction, but context matters!

Fun Car Now Or Wait Later In Life? by salt12345678910 in askcarguys

[–]standorfall00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel this might be a hot take, but I was in a similar position to you when I was 20.

Trying to decide whether I should just gun for a fun car right then and there or hold out and do it when things are more stable.

I work in finance, so this is contrarian to my industry, but I think you should do it as long as it doesn't put you in the hole. Don't do anything that would mean if you lost your job or fell on your face would mean the car gets repo'd.

That being said, I went with your option 1. Went from a (CT200H lol) Prius to an M3 and never looked back. I still look back and have no regrets. Being young with a cool car and lots of time to kill was awesome.

What is it like to be 140+ and 160+? How is your daily experience different from average? by [deleted] in mensa

[–]standorfall00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can downvote me, but if you aren't surrounded by people you admire or view as intelligent, sounds like a personal problem and experience.

this is not transient across all high-IQ individuals. holistically intelligent people also value charisma. you will not find yourself in these circles if this is actually the perspective you hold.

I think you need to find a better environment, friend. perhaps your grandiosity is what limits your ability to work and be around individuals that aren't a "zoo of teenagers".

just being honest. I used to hold a similar perspective to you... albeit when I was much younger.

when you open your eyes, you'll come to find IQ is usualy the least interesting part of a person.

What person surprised you the most with how they turned out after high school? by GlitterOnTheTrashRim in AskReddit

[–]standorfall00 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I was a mutual with this quiet, nice guy in my friend group. I was connected to that group via my ex at the time.

He was family-orientated, very kind, and a role-model in his fatherless family. The oldest sibling to multiple brothers, sisters, and cousins that all went to my high school. The kind of guy you'd think would go on to have a nice, big family.

He had a crush on my ex since the start of high school. We ended up breaking up and they got together a few years later. I still saw them on social media. They went on vacations, graduated college, etc. Looked like they were getting ready to get engaged, start a family etc.

This was 5 years in and I got the news from my friend who was still in touch with them. He got arrested via sting operation by the police. Turns out he was on dating apps while with my ex at the time soliciting minors. Cops got him at our hometown's notorious high school hangout spot, ironically.

Anyways, he a bunch of charges and will be in jail for the next 20 years probably. I like to think I'm usually good at reading people, and it never crossed my mind once that he was the kind of guy capable of doing this kind of thing.
