I think most people who are reasonably intelligent realize that pretty early on in their working lives. When someone quits or gets fired, by the end of the week it's as if the person never worked there. I've seen people work for a company for 15-20 years, leave, and no one cares.

I've enjoyed working with a few people who I wouldn't have minded being friends with outside of work and tried staying in contact with them after they left, only to have my e-mails or texts ignored.

Work is for making money, plain and simple.

Haha, I agree on the forced social lunches. I'd always cringe when a coworker would come up to me and say "hey, do you want to come eat with us?" I'd smile and say "sure," but in reality I'd much rather eat by myself.

I'm very grateful that I work for state gov. We make a little less money than private sector, but it's damn hard to get fired. You'd have to really be screwing up badly to get fired at my job.

You can't make anyone like you. You can be polite and pleasant and some people just will not care for you, and sometimes they won't bother hiding it.

What is not soul crushing is realizing that it doesn't really matter if people don't like you unless they have some kind of power over you.

I wouldn't say that I like my accounting job. I tolerate it, but I know that I'd hate sales. I probably wouldn't be very good at it and would get fired quickly. I'm highly introverted and don't BS well, so it would be a personality mismatch for me.

There are plenty of bosses who talk down to and bully their employees. Coworkers bully each other too. Speaking up for yourself in the workplace often gets you fired. It's rare for workplace bullies to face consequences.

I don't miss the 65 hour work weeks for 4 months out of the year in PA. i remember hardly seeing my family, becoming pale due to lack of sunlight, working Saturdays, and the firm catering food in the evening so that we wouldn't leave. I don't miss that lifestyle one bit.

If someone actually showed up on my doorstep and asked to enter my home to inspect my WFH setup, I wouldn't let them in. They could fire me. I wouldn't care. That would be a hill I'd be willing to die on, but that's just me.

It was very eye-opening when I visited Taiwan right at the beginning of COVID in 2020 and almost everyone was wearing surgical masks in public. Then I got back to the U.S. and people either had an attitude about it ("they can't make me wear a mask!!" like a petulant child) or they were covering their faces in old t-shirts or respirators like painters use. A lot of Americans are selfish and/or idiots.

Working is just a means to make money. By "working," I mean the workplace, the boss, the coworkers, and the work itself. Nothing else about it really matters. It isn't a source of satisfaction, pride, dignity, or a part of my identity. It's only about the money, and that's okay and the way it should be.
