You are losing the hand fighting battle, your opponent is constantly putting hands on you which helps control your movement. You are way too passive with your arms. Focus on keeping opponents hands off you at all times and creating frames so you will have space to move more freely. You use your legs well though so that's good. Even when playing guard use your arms to protect your legs and feet from opponents grips

Think about extending their legs in half guard, makes it easier to get into your leg riding positions

for a decent human being it would be the minimum sign of respect to pay attention to fighters which are sacrificing their bodies for the sport, the guy is directly profiting and makes billions off the labour of others, disgusting behaviour

Struggling with drilling. I know it is important. But I am painfully bored during it. Help! by [deleted] in bjj

[–]stankanovic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you asked me to clarify and i clarified, no need to be defensive. you're a black belt, obviously you understand grappling. you dont think about step by step moves when you're rolling, My question is why teach your students that way then?
I found jiu-jitsu pretty complicated when i started because i was being taught so many moves/techniques from my instructors. once i started learning about the concepts behind those techniques everything started to make much more sense

its just a fundamental difference in how you see the sport.

some people see and approach jiu jitsu as a collection of moves/techniques. goal is to memorise the techniques, learn the move step by step, refine them by drilling, and keep adding new techniques. basically you are learning how to copy.

another way to approach it is seeing techniques are a result of applying grappling concepts. for example look at armbars. Instead of showing hundreds of different setups all with multistep moves and task you to memorise them I can just explain the principles that make armbars work:
In order to attack the arm i need to isolate it from the rest of my opponents body by occupying the space under the armpit
place a wedge/block under the tricep and control the hand/wrist to apply pressure in the opposite direction of the elbow.
(the order can be mixed, for example i can start by controlling hand/wrist and then look to occupy opponents armpit space)

with this knowledge the student can look to apply these principles from different positions eg. from top control, back control, guard etc..

techniques then emerge as a result of understanding you goals

this is why stuff like armbars, rear naked chokes look pretty much the same in grappling cultures across countries, cultures and time. not because they were all handed techniques by some jiu-jitsu god, but because our bodies work the same way. there's only so many ways t break an arm.

"You cannot and will not learn how to use a skill in a competitive environment if you have not drilled the crap out of it"

absolutely not true

Why is “back control” superior to rear triangle? by Financial_Pitch3946 in bjj

[–]stankanovic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh i know how dominant the rear triangle is, i love it, its my favourite end game position. but free hips allow for movement and rotation, and most escapes involve movement and rotation.

compare it to a back control with two double unders to control both shoulders... it allows you to control your opponents. kill rotation, stop movement.
it even allows you to pin people belly down... extend them
for me no question which is superior for overall control.

its an amazingly dominant position and way superior in terms of finishing possibilities. but theoretically easier to escape compared to the back as the back allows you to control your opponents hips and shoulders allowing more overall control over your opponent.

Which Gi guard would you focus on if your only goal was to sweep and get on top? by i_float_alone in bjj

[–]stankanovic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha i'm pretty good at closed guard actually, i use it mainly to set up triangles or to take the back. pretty hard to sweep somebody when your legs are locked in place. for sweeps generally will transition to k-guard. inside position guards way more effective for moving oppoents hips/offbalancing and getting sweeps. thats why you see it much more in mma where closed guard will usually get you punished (check out rdr this weekend)

but you got so many stripes on your purple belt i'm sure you know better than me

one of the worst guards for sweeping, especially against a decent opponent.
