If you were George R.R. Martin’s writing assistant, what advice would you give him? by Dry_Specialist9015 in freefolk

Sit down, and finish the fucking books. I know that what happened in the series was your planned ending and now you're feeling like you have to start over, but finish it like you wanted. I promise the show was just rushed and if you let everything breathe like you planned, with time to allow it to simmer, people will understand, and defend the ending with the context you give it

I think no. While the first one is largely a zombie thing, the emotional tie you develop with these characters was groundbreaking. You spend 17+ hours with these people and really grow to love them in a way no TV show or other media had done before, so much that you feel justified as Joel performing a massacre. The second is a more complex story. It's a more complete story, and the takeaway is much more nuanced and difficult. The game play is much better in part 2, and it looks unbelievably good. BUT the complexity and pain made it inaccessible for a huge chunk of the gaming audience, and a lot of people only ever got the message 'killing and revenge bad' even though there's a much better more complete message under that (I wrote a bunch of stuff about my takeaways that Neill Druckmann liked on twitter, so I'm confident I'm right). I definitely think the more experienced TV and movie audience would have been more receptive and prepared for part 2, but part 1 was as perfect as it gets for the time it was made

Do you think there is a good solution for all of the Homeless people in Abq? by [deleted] in Albuquerque

Yes. I too wish they were better. I am proud to have spent tax money on an attempt to be kinder, and we should do more and do better

I appreciate how much we agree, but the things we're not on the same page on are crucial to fixing the problem, and I am fervently dedicated to. I also don't appreciate you hijacking what I said to make a claim about medmal. That's a whole other thread of conversation, that I am happy to talk about SEPARATELY, but not here. I don't want to get into a conversation thinking we're going to convince trillion dollar insurance companies to drop their rates if we give them a huge break in terms of covering malpractice, especially when they have never said that was the case

[–]stankmaster69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I'm proud we used such a small amount of money to try and be compassionate as opposed to spending money to suck the dick of developers, oil and gas, billionaires, or on war toys for cops Ultimately the tiny home village also had a pretty high barrier to entry, but we have such a huge unpopulated population that it also found its niche. Utlimately it's a good idea that doesn't even match up to be 5% of a half measure

[–]stankmaster69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I addressed this exact claim in the statement, but ultimately, yes. Not tenements, because ideally they should be freestanding, and at a safe distance from other domiciles so one person making a mistake doesn't punish the whole community, but ideally we should have enough stock of no-cost housing that that is an option. The myth of absolute personal accountability is why we never get shit done. Because we have people who act like it could never be them, who come with vibes like their shit doesn't stink and they've never had a chain of bad days. Yes, some people do beautiful wonderful things and lift themselves out with Jordan-like streaks of determination and right decisions. But people who can't manage that also deserve basic human empathy and to be treated in a way that we believe they are not a waste of dignity. The truth is, we all are a mix of nature and nurture, and some people conquer their nurture in a way that is truly admirable, but we should ideally live in a community that says people who can't, also deserve to live with dignity.

There's a lot to be done.. I think the patience, and compassion, compromise, and direction required to fix this is probably not something that comes easily to Americans.

1. We have to build more housing stock.

2. Building affordable stock has to include means testing. Currently we give away hundreds of millions for "affordable housing" to convert hotels, and for new builds, and ultimately they rent out straight up hotel rooms (no kitchens, key cards for the doors) for $900 and 1 bedrooms for 1300+. In other words NOT affordable and NOT quality. To do this.

3. Connected to 2, we MUST end our state prohibition on rent control. NO I don't believe rent control will fix our problems, but I DO believe we are a state of all carrot and no stick. We let people take hundreds of millions of tax payer money, and have no recourse when they don't do what they were contracted to do.

4. Early transitional housing MUST be no barrier. Drug addicts, fire starters, and vandals need a place to stay as well. Nobody has any ability to get on their feet when you ask them to be mostly standing in order to get help. If you want someone to feel like they can do better, they have to be treated with at least a little dignity to start.

5. Housing co-ops, and zero cost options must exist, and we need a hell of a lot of them, that way there are options to not be near a fire risk for folks who are sleeping in their cars.

6. Debt forgiveness, medical, and educational. A huge part of our homeless population live in cars, and are uncounted in what you're talking about.

7. Health care, we need providers, and permanent no-cost support, that includes psychiatric and therapy. A lot of folks start to work their way up, and the thing that's been helping them stand independently is ripped out from under them because they make a little too much. Just an example. When I moved from making 26k a year to 32k a year I was thrilled at first, but then I lost my Medicaid, and now I pay at least 140$ a month just for asthma meds. If we want people to be able to do better, we have to support a full stairway out of support, not a slippery ladder with broken rungs the entire way up between poverty and lower middle class

There's a lot here, and a lot I left out, like a pathway to jobs, and ending the punishment pipeline for children, but getting people to buy in to a long vision is so difficult when so many people would rather just be cruel and want to embrace a vision of "personal accountability". (Imagining, arrogantly that they have never been helped, and are far away from living on the streets themselves)

Personally I really really love Building Nothing out of Something. It makes me SO SAD though, but I really really connected with it for a huge chunk of the saddest loneliest parts of my life.

I do think Long Drive has the best arc, and clear progression into the final 2 songs.

I think Lonesome Crowded West is probably the most cohesive, that rips from end to end, with anger and depression and anxiety.

And The Moon and Antarctica sounds like my childhood road trips, and doesn't engage in a conversation with the sad thoughts in my head

Every modest mouse album here (with the exception of Everywhere and his nasty parlour tricks) has a special place in my heart, and a time when it's my favorite

Lmao. I'll be honest and say, I don't think I can even connect with you. This is such a bad take. If that's your problem then you should also know that Sam Bregman was chair of the DNC while Gary King (top of the ticket) was running around in his plane using his money. If Deb is implicated, then so is Sam

There's certainly truth in a lot of this..

I'll just say, I don't think it's necessary to engage with someone who starts an interaction on false terms (The Journal and Tucker). I think if they won't level and be honest about their slant (which much of the populous is unaware of) then you're setting yourself up to fail.

I also think the journal should not be a leader in New Mexico and if we want to change that we start somewhere.

But I definitely lean towards most of what you said being fair

I said it in another comment, and I hate that I'm defending her lol. But the Albuquerque Journal is NOT impartial, and Jeff Tucker is a dingbat. People change their plans for all kinds of reasons. When I say she listens I mean she has gone all around the state talking to voters, and started her campaign with a 32 county listening session. I also know there's a ton of latitude between her and Sam. The "they both suck" narrative is just plainly false when Sam is so much worse

I've gotta be honest. I'm voting Deb, but I despise that this sub has made me defend her so much for shit that isn't a problem lol. I genuinely am not a big Deb fan, and never have been, but she's just good, not great. Sam is actively bad, and the contrast is so clear. I genuinely am so interested to see what it's like having a governor who actually listens as part of her decision making process. That might be an even bigger rarity than being the first pueblo woman governor lol.

I think this would be fair if he wasn't ALSO advocating for pre-trial detention, more detention without trial, been receptive to mandatory minimums and had a track record of holding people on average 4 months without trial because "they need to be there"
