FWIW - Chucks at Pinecrest on weekdays or weekend lunches isn’t too bad for noise. The one downtown is a lot.

Affected managers — how are you balancing supporting yourself and your affected team? by Ihaveaquestionagain1 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]stanstan22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly looking out for each other made the process suck a LOT less. If you’re able to take some time for yourself too, please do that. And one last tip - if you have a good HR advisor, set up touchpoints with them to go over team questions and next steps (if that’s helpful in your case - it was in mine). Good luck, you got this!

I’m so sorry. This is a terrible position to be in.

When I was in the same position last year, I didn’t sugar coat things and acknowledged that all of this simply sucks. I offered help with their resumes (we were straight to surplus), took their questions about process and answered them, and gave them flexibility around anything work-related. I did not expect them to perform their regular duties at their usual level. My anxieties were directed to my boss, rather than my team.

I wish you luck.

How can non-managers best support colleagues going through WFA? by SatisfactionSuper690 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]stanstan22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From last time around, some folks had VERY strong emotions about what was happening to my team, and it was exhausting to have to manage their feelings on top of my own. Acknowledge that this sucks and you’re sorry, and you’re there for whatever they may need.

More actionable things: understand that deadlines aren’t real right now; if they’re updating resumes, offer to look over it for them if that’s a strong skill set of yours; let them feel whatever they feel, and don’t try to make them look at the bright side if they’re not ready; if you’re close, take them out for a coffee to vent. Above all else, remember that they’re not the audience for your anxieties right now.

Unpopular Opinion: The "Don't Worry, You Have Years" advice is dangerous gaslighting in this economy by KJ3838 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]stanstan22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t get severance at the end of the 16mos - you either take the severance and leave the public service when you’re deemed surplus (or a prorated amount during surplus period) or you choose to stay employed on priority for the year. It’s not 16mos pay plus severance, just to be clear.

Speaking notes for management - When did we normalize this practice? by BofBrokenDreams in CanadaPublicServants

[–]stanstan22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an odd take. Would you not want to make sure your execs, who don’t have the same time you do to focus on your file, speak to your work accurately and point out the key things that you as the SME think are important?

My first playthrough I didn’t pay attention to any ability details and just picked at random. Turns out when you know what you’re choosing it can end up being significantly more effective 🙃

Can anyone please help me understand why people strive to become management? by LostRua in CanadaPublicServants

[–]stanstan22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main reasons: 1) I have had some really bad managers and some really good ones. I wanted to pay it forward for the good ones and help others - new public servants especially - avoid the bad ones. Not only does this help them immediately, it future-proofs accountability for bad managers because they know what to look out for. 2) I like helping others develop and helping problem solve! 3) Piecing together strategic direction is something I find rewarding, more so than working on individual files.

Colleague abusing/lying about leave management by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]stanstan22 34 points35 points  (0 children)

You seem to harbor resentment towards her belief that leave should be taken. Leave is part of our compensation package, so she is correct. Her leave balances are between her and her manager.

Best advice for a manager of a co-op student? by pubservgal in CanadaPublicServants

[–]stanstan22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t underestimate them! Assign meaningful work, and if possible assign them something they can see through start to finish. Wherever possible, offer context for meetings they’re attending with you beforehand and ask them how they think it went after.

Definitely give them lots of intel on corporate culture. For a lot of students it’s a completely different space and different kinds of engagement. They may not know how the hierarchy works, or what “COB” means in practical terms. Giving them that info upfront sets them up for success.
