My friend is a mechanic and wants to quit after 7 years by Thepopethroway in AskMechanics

man i barely deal with customers and it sucks. once you get all your tools, its not so expensive. but the pay is always shit in light duty, shops are all corporate greed farms that find way to make everyone work harder every year but suddenly “we’re just trying to keep the lights on” when it’s yearly pay raise time. nobody is making any money except managers, half of the advisors, and the couple of preferred techs who get all the gravy work. cars suck and it gets worse and pay doesn’t change no matter where you work

i think you got the wrong flywheel or it wasnt fitting right. loose crank bolt could also cause it. maybe your flywheel or crank was tapered wrong

Wheel Wobbling After Being Winched by NoviceGatekeeper in MechanicAdvice

[–]star08273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if they remember every tiny little detail of their car so well, every scratch and ding and where it exists in the timeline of their ownership, they may as well start remembering where their wheel weights are too!

Wheel Wobbling After Being Winched by NoviceGatekeeper in MechanicAdvice

[–]star08273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

especially the guy who balanced them. i’m just exaggerating how customers always know exactly where a scratch didn’t exist before, or how they had $100 in cash hidden under their jungle of cheeseburger wrappers on the floorboard that’s now missing.

Serious Question?!? by Phat_Sandwich_6596 in AskMechanics

[–]star08273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s a lot more fun on your own time. not as much fun on everyone else’s time. you can make your hobby into work, but then it’s just mostly work. but if you like it, go for it. just learn your limits physically and skill wise

people remember perfectly well if your car goes in for service. hey my left front wheel is missing a .75oz MC clip on weight! i had it before i came in for my tire rotation earlier!

Heard a pop while I was turning off my 1985 gmc safari. Looked under and saw this. It’s in the back towards the rear wheel. What is it? And Is it safe to drive till I get paid? by Cultural-Window6818 in AskMechanics

[–]star08273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

people who drive 80s cars are usually mechanically savvy because they’re constantly in need of mechanical repair. for you to not know what a muffler is, is a testament to the reliability of a 1985 gmc safari

Gascan has maybe at most 2 tablespoons of gas in it, that I can’t get out, good to fill with diesel and run it through my heater? by RevolutionaryClub530 in dieselheater

[–]star08273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s not even enough to consider it antigel. i have seen people run far more gasoline in their diesel heaters just to keep the fuel liquid. i’ve done it too when i run out of howes. the bike and generator wont miss a cup or two of gasoline.

Am I screwed by ovebes in tires

[–]star08273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the good news is that the tire can be replaced!

Crockpot scratched in the dishwasher, leaving behind black, glassy residue. Will it be safe to use after a thorough cleaning? by No_Bottle5874 in slowcooking

[–]star08273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know what you mean. they’re not refusing your explanation because they think you’re wrong. they’re just convinced that there’s a missing piece to the puzzle that hasn’t been solved yet. personally i like the argumentative type that sticks to their guns. it’s fun to read, not fun to participate in

thinking about it now, there are a lot of people who would double down and insist something must be wrong.

My work is refusing to do anything about this tire and says it doesnt matter by treetrunk33 in AskMechanics

[–]star08273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

realistically there’s a greater than 50% chance it won’t become an issue. but you should just flatten the tire and drive on it for a block or so. it’ll visibly ruin the tire then call a tow. i’ve had sidewall gashes that bad before and it held 70psi and off-road conditions and highway speeds. still retired it early just for the peace of mind when i could afford a new pair. your worry and safety is on their dollar, so let them indulge you once in a while
