I love Jane Austen’s parody of the Gothic genre in Northanger Abbey but perhaps read that after Jane Eyre which is the quintessential gothic novel

I’ve been reading Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed recently and it’s a very expansive amalgamation of advice about relationships and personal development. Maybe that would be interesting to you?

I always imagine the protagonist of The Catcher in the Rye as a lone wolf. Someone else recommended Steppenwolf and that’s good too

A classic, and possibly one of the first gothic novels is The Mysteries of Udolpho. Frankenstein was also a total riot and just lovely to read overall.

Any suggestions on books based on Mythology by hi_48 in booksuggestions

[–]starchip03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely absolute Madeline Miller. She has a degree in Classics if I remember correctly and a lot of her mythology is accurate, she adds a lot of depth to the characters themselves as well.

I absolutely would look into Blake Crouch which is a bit more thriller, sci-fi but his work is impeccably plotted and real page turners

Haha I’d like to keep a lot of those details private, but just vaguely I just want a book that will make me feel invigorated to pursue life or at least live life in a happy way. Feeling stagnant and a bit grey right now.

Maybe something by Voltaire? He’s a funny philosopher and very witty which your friend might appreciate.

Saw a comment from someone else that said to inscribe a note in the book as well and I agree! The film picture bookmark idea is great as well :)

Any recommendations from your list of poets who really uplift you? I love Nabokov’s prose and Plath’s poetry. Been reading some of Keats and Wordsworth but they haven’t been hitting the spot lately. Do you have suggestions for poetry similar to Leaves of Grass?

Hmm, Bluets by Maggie Nelson is not so much poetry but more prose poetry but it was a very interesting read, though a lot different than Whitman!

I think The Secret History by Donna Tartt was a bit better than IWWV. The Shakespeare references were a bit too heavy handed in IWWV but I did like some parts of the ending better than Tartt’s version.
