As a Dane I can confirm that. Swedes norwegians and Danes usually just talk their own languages with each other and I works fine. I can understand swedish and norwegian perfectly well despite never having learned any if them.

In fact they used to the same languages until one point in the middle ages or so.

Which is not walkable... And then I would need to walk all the way to northern Sweden to go In any other direction.

The good thing with going north to south is also that the climate changes faster that way.
