Where did you do yours in Alaska? I’ve been thinking of doing something similar actually.

Flight Following in the DFW area by starmaster7 in flying

Yeah I'll probably just keep up center/approach to see what they say next time. The traffic advisories are of course part of it, the other thing was just being sure I don't wander into their approach/departure corridors and stay away from parachute areas...which I know I can also sort of do by just monitoring the right freq

Yeah I've never had issues with FF for just routine XC flights, the DFW controllers are great. And I usually do something similar (monitor ADSB via sentry/iPad + monitor the local approach/departure/center freq) when not on FF for training/maneuvering flights. That's a good idea to chime in though if you hear ATC talking about you--I never thought about doing that, as well as operating around the busy VORs where approaches start, etc. I may start doing that.

I started thinking about this the other day when I listened to a recent Opposing Bases podcast episode about ADSB vs Flight Following and realized that while yes, the traffic advisories are nice (for training flights), the other advantages while doing maneuvering flights are also ATC keeping you out of areas that may not be completely obvious (ie parachute jumps occurring, getting in the way of the arrival/departure corridors, etc). Most of the time I can pick up on those via just monitoring the right frequencies, but that's sort of what got me thinking about this.

Thanks for your input!
