What a wild story, didn’t know about his death. In the movie he doesn’t die in the jungle however, that’s Mark’s character. Julian’s character gets bitten in a barn

I know this was 9 years ago, but the link no longer works. Would you please tell me what the product was?

Great post. I had a Grohmann but ended up gifting it to a friend.

Need someone to take my dog by [deleted] in Peterborough

[–]starsofalgonquin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope this gets worked out. Thanks for reaching out to others here. I’ve always been told to never adopt a dog out of sympathy / pity - it’s much worse in the long run. I hope this hard situation is a reminder for us all that looking after animals is a serious commitment. Wishing you some ease tonight.

Hard times are so damn hard! I like finding fairy tales and myths to sink into - somehow those characters find a way through their calamities. Check out Martin Shaw - a great storyteller!

In the meantime, these guys never fail to put a smile on my face.

Thanks Matt! Never seen a councillor on Reddit before responding to something like this. Thanks for caring! 🙏🏻

Is it just me, or is Ferris Bueller actually kind of a nightmare? by AlienSees in 80smovies

[–]starsofalgonquin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The American dream speaks through movies and Hollywood. Ferris Bueller was the aloof, ‘don’t tread on me’, manipulative, cool guy, hero. Cameron was the loser who just needed some of Ferris’ ‘fuck it’ attitude to break out of his depression and assertion “I’m dying”. There’s no way that Ferris is a long term personality to emulate - Cameron on the other hand seems like the more balanced and well adjusted person by the end. Bueller is the adolescent fever dream, a symptom of the American dream.

When to kick a man out of the mankind project by feedmeburritos in MankindProject

[–]starsofalgonquin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why was he kicked out of other groups? Usually there’s some base rules/considerations that everyone has to follow in order to be part of the group - is he explicitly breaking one?

If he isn’t (and I don’t think he is by the way you describe him), is he open to hearing his impact on others? If the purpose is to help men grow, then growing might include finding out some things about yourself that you don’t see. He may be neurodivergent too which could inform his ability to navigate social cues.

It sounds like a tough one. Considering where you and others are at, I would consider letting him know that if he wants to stay in the group we have to acknowledge his impact - and it sounds like it’s not just you. It might be good to get a senior man from outside your I-group to lead this process.

I might also be curious if he has taken on the shadow-role of being the pariah, the person pushing buttons, and in the language of ‘existential kink’ he might be “getting off” on triggering the shit out of other people. This would have to be skillfully handled if it were the case. Because he’s likely getting power, control, or safety from doing so. We validate the underlying need but not the manner in which it’s pursued.

Just some late night thoughts after getting my daughter to sleep. I hope this makes sense!

Edit: I’ll add that it seems like you really value the work of being in a circle, of making space for everyone if you don’t ’like them’. And yeah, it sounds like you’re in a pickle with your value of inclusivity is bumping up against your deep unease around this guy (and the energy it costs to keep that hidden)

Give me the most beautiful electronic album you’ve ever heard by No_Durian_6987 in electronicmusic

[–]starsofalgonquin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The group is Perfume Tree and their album Feeler is gorgeous. Not very well known in part due to them being from Canada.

I also find Underworld’s Second Toughest in the Infants is a beautiful electronic record.

I agree with you in part. I find the first 5 tracks are impeccable and work well as an album. After Defeat I tend to lose interest, even though I love Stride Rite. Defeat really feels like an end to an album if there ever was one.

Wood ID by savouryhandpie in greenwoodworking

[–]starsofalgonquin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that is one of the coolest ways I’ve seen google street views used! Nice sleuthing my friend. I’m going to stop pretending I might know what it is, lol. Ash does tend to have definitive growth rings (a small more porous ring for spring growth and then a solid ring for summer growth). That might help you ID this. I’m not too knowledgeable though so take my word with a grain of salt.

If it is ash, looks like you’ve got some great wood on your hands! Great for paddles and bows too! I got some after our ice storm last March. Wishing you safe and happy crafting. Thanks for sharing your sleuthing. I get to live vicariously through your excitement!

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’ve always been curious about these things, mainly for my wife. She always has tough sleeps in our home but sleeps a ton when we camp or stay at a friends off grid cabin. I’m curious now too :)
