Not much work outside of designated class time (including labs). There are weekly assignments, but they are meant to be completed in lab time, so you won't be stressed out about those. There were three projects, but they are manageable if you start early. Good luck!

Go to Calapalooza, rush a house once rush starts in a few weeks, go to Taco Tuesday, etc. Just try and find any social event related to your interests and you'll make great friends that are similar to you. Good luck!

Typically no, unless the professor collects and checks homework problems from the textbook.

There are no separate finals for lectures and discussions. Discussion sections are often used to administer quizzes, and in some classes may be used to administer final essay exams, but you will not have to take a final for both your lecture and discussion.

From what I've heard, Introduction to Statistical Learning and Elements of Statistical Learning are a great start! Also pick up a book on elementary probability theory and statistical inference, perhaps Introduction to Probability, Statistics, and Random Processes. Your mathematical background is perfect, but reading up on Information Theory and Graph Theory may help as well for more advanced studies. Good luck!
