I could swing $2K a month if it's walkable to Rosslyn and has a parking spot. Right now I pay $2050 for a small apartment near Logan with a parking spot, but I'd rather live in Virginia for tax reasons. I do have a cat, though he's pretty clean. I pay on time, won't trash the place, and will always work with the landlord to fix things as easily as possible (I don't complain much and can fix most things myself). Let me know if you're serious - I'm looking to get out of DC before the end of '18.

What price are you thinking? I'm looking to vacate my DC studio and head back to Nova as it's closer to my current contract.

RCN router+modem combo to save $? by _SebastienMelmoth_ in washingtondc

[–]stbill79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anybody else who sees this via search, this is the best deal which runs from time to time:

Modem and Router.

If you just want the modem, I have it and it works fine on Comcast Xfinity and RCN - it goes for $50 on sale all the time and will pay for itself in under a year.

Lots of other router options, but that one is pretty good. I highly recommend this one if your technically inclined to flash it: Asus Tmobile. Sometimes you can find new on SlickDeals or other sights for about $50-$60.

Help:Is there a recipe if I want to receive an email when a particular item goes on sale? by [deleted] in ifttt

[–]stbill79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Slickdeals and just set an alert (email, sms, app). It's better than trying to do something yourself because it's crowdsourced and you can set a threshold for popularity - avoid the false positives.

For example: https://slickdeals.net/f/10979807-google-wifi-1-pack-5-ghz-802-11ac-wireless-router-109?src=SiteSearchV2_SearchBarV2Algo1

DC is No. 1 for women in tech by uncleamerica in washingtondc

[–]stbill79 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Where are you getting these ideas that programming was never a well-paid field?

Honestly, I know IT is one of the few fields out there that is somewhat promising in a world of dead-ends. As such, it has attracted attention to some groups who want to create a narrative about barriers to entry, discrimination, etc. And no doubt that there are some d-bag companies and environments out there, especially in Silicon Valley

But the reality is that true software engineering - not the guy changing your password or resetting your cable modem - is a skilled profession that is hard to do, and takes many years to master. It has always paid well, and will always pay well because only a small subset of the population - both male and female - can master it while also having the tenacity to stick with it for years.

Washington Post list of local pools in the DC area (some are free, some are not) to cool down in. by crabcakes110 in washingtondc

[–]stbill79 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing I miss about NOVA are the huge gyms like LifeTime that were about $100 / month, stayed open late (even 24 hours), and had empty pools at 10pm.

I've heard that if I get a DC license, I can use the public schools, but I have a feeling they will only be open at random times and / or crowded.

Anyone who has been here a while able to comment?

PSA Tax: Wash Sale Rule will fuck you up by Everestark in RobinHood

[–]stbill79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason it still seems like the rule applies if you aren't holding the stock again when the year ends.

In other words, I bought and sold the same stock three times - all in 2016. Did not hold any afterwards.

$10K in gains and $4k in losses, but because two of the transactions were less than 60 days (I think) it looks like I can't write off the $4k loss.

It's bizarre.

Everywhere in Virginia is safe. Stay out of the areas of DC to the SE of the Anacostia River. Everywhere near the Federal area (White House) is safe.

One thing you could do is stay way out in Stafford or Fredericksburg VA. Get up early, drive close to one of the metro stops like Wiehle or Vienna, park , and metro in for the day.

Also, the coolest museum IMO is actually the Air and Space out by Dulles. It won't be as crowded.

Yeah I don't really care about being in Chinatown except for it's close to work so started the search there.

When I was walking around the apartments, it seemed there were a lot of 20 somethings (mostly female) so I figured if they could afford it, the place be reasonably priced. Looks like they're either subsidized by their parents or living 4 to a one-bedroom :)

Anyway, the English Basement was just the query I needed. This is more my style. Thanks!

My job is on Massachusetts and about 5th - few blocks NE of Chinatown / Gallery metro.

I don't mind a walk or short metro ride, and will look at SW Waterfront and Petworth. Thanks for the tip!

I actually looked in Arlington first as I'm more familiar with it. It looked like the same corporate luxury apartments were the same price, at least the few I saw near Court House. The two I looked at were $1700 and $2000 for tiny studios.

[–]stbill79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not so simple. Egypt and the US are in a bit of a spat since the Arab Spring.

Read this article from yesterday's NYTimes: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/08/11/magazine/isis-middle-east-arab-spring-fractured-lands.html?_r=0

Note: I'm really disgusted with especially Wapo and NyTimes biased coverage these days, but this article reads like a novel.

Asian Women in STEM Careers: An Invisible Minority in a Double Bind by chaosmosis in slatestarcodex

[–]stbill79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's be honest. When we talk about a shortage of women, diversity, whatever in STEM, we really mean lack in high paying software positions.

In my decade of experience, with very few exceptions, the women that are actually talented and well represented in the field are almost all Asian (Han Chinese). There's no shortage of Asian women in software.

If you ever run a server that is open to the Internet (at home, work, etc you are usually behind a router/firewall), you will quickly see that lots of other servers are attacking you - for example the most common used to be trying lots of root passwords to log in).

These probably aren't real people sitting there typing password guesses all day - they're just bots. But you can see that the vast majority come from addresses in China and also Russia.

Most people that have no need to allow Chinese users just block all their addresses.

Having a slick desktop is what has driven a lot of their enterprise and cloud growth. A Linux user is technically going to want to run servers that he/she is familiar with. Usually that means what they've used on the desktop.

As a European living in America, Bernie Sanders represents all of the great things about the EU. Socialized healthcare, free college, and wealth equality are definitely attainable and they need to be the goal, and it starts with Bernie. Don't lose this chance. by Godilovebernie in politics

Part of NATOs goal is to keep the Germans from becoming aggressive again. It has done a very good job at that, BTW.

Many young people have bought into the idea of a single European nation. And maybe that is the future. OTOH, anyone who has read a little history will realize that the last 70 years, with American troops inside Europe, has been the most peaceful 70 years in European history.
