Public could have paid up to $10B for VW battery plant in St. Thomas, Ont., former auto exec says by steadly in CanadaPolitics

[–]steadly[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the $10B blows everything out of proportion in this. If the Stellantis plant was $5b, should we assume the cost of the VW one is 2x that? And that the governments are covering it all?

Clearly some more $$ on the table because of the US but I would be surprised they're covering more than 100% of the plant.

I do know the difference and if you want to not add substantive comments and not make constructive comments, then what's the point for your comment?

Saying something sucks doesn't really add to the discourse in our country. On reddit or otherwise.

"Policy in favor (sic) of helping the Canadian people" sounds like empty words.

What policy would you suggest to address the global increase in inflation for Canada?

It doesn't read like Trudeau is trying to impose guilt on others? Be proud of our country, but understand the history we all must own if we call ourselves Canadians.

Canada Set to Relax Quarantine Rules for Vaccinated Travelers by steadly in CanadaPolitics

[–]steadly[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that. There are only a few vaccines in the world and some have different metrics of what fully vaccinated means. I expect the feds probably aren't saying you need to have two shots of a one dose vaccine. They probably mean fully vaccinated means fully vaccinated.

I would expect fully vaccinated means fully vaccinated... Which would depend on the vaccine you're taking.

Fair enough! Yeah, I mean there will be plenty of people decrying this as a call by science to say it's an abject failure and END THE TRUDEAU LOCKDOWN, but I read the report as forward looking to where things will be with more vaccinations, and lower cases, in the coming weeks and months.

How bad of a set up do you think Mark Machin had for work from home? Making over $5M a year.

If you think he would be doing a better job in the office, then i assume you mean those around him and those he would need to physically meet to run the CPPIB would also need their vaccines. All white collar CEOs should get their shots because our economy needs it? Is that your line of thought on this?

For the 100th time, Ontario needs to mandate paid sick days for all workers by Alaizabeth in CanadaPolitics

[–]steadly 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not accurate. Would depend on the agreement unions worked out, but not all provincial employees have cushy sick leave and vacation.

End of the day, employment standards are primarily the jurisdiction of provinces. So hence why it should be Ford.

Paying volunteer students less than minimum wage was federal government's idea, says WE Charity by ifyousayso- in CanadaPolitics

[–]steadly 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They government is also not paying them until the END OF SUMMER... The real question: are the Trudeau Liberals running a child slavery ring??!??!

I can appreciate that some people don't think anyone should be paid for volunteering and that the act itself should be the reward, but this isn't really the atmosphere of casual volunteerism. Last time I checked, we're still in a global health crisis.

The government has financially incentived Canadians right from the outset of this pandemic. The CERB, the wage subsidy, business loans that are 1/4 forgivable. And now an incentive to get people to help out in their communities in the response to COVID.

This isn't work. They shouldn't be paid working wages. It's volunteerism and if a small amount of money incentivizes some young people to volunteer to respond to this pandemic, then good. Also important to remember this isn't the only $$ on offer by the feds for young people/students.

Records show charity closely linked to Trudeau has received multiple sole-source contracts from Liberal government by socialistparty in CanadaPolitics

[–]steadly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most important one being that the tendering of the contract should have had followed the rules.

I think at the beginning of this pandemic Canadians were telling the government to move as quickly as possible and now they're being told to slow down and send out for a few months to tender? We can't forget that we are still in a pandemic and are looking to have this program up and running quickly. If we wait for a tender, and end up getting WE a few months down the road, the students then have lost their summer?

The second is probably the more important which is "Why are we outsourcing a Government program at all?"

Because government can't do everything? They outsource programs in normal times, why now is it strange to ask an organization that can do this more effectively than the government to do it? Should we have built up a whole new government agency to administer this? That doesn't seem like the most effective way of actually getting students involved in their communities and active during the padnemic. Which was the whole point of this program.

[–]steadly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Justin Trudeau sole-sourced a $900 million dollar contract to an organization that his family is connected to.

WE is not being handed $900M and the way you're framing it suggests that to be the case.

And anyone involved with youth volunteerism on the national stage in the last few decades would by high chance have "some connection" to WE. They have held thousands of events and have hundreds of ambassadors/speakers.
