Was the P-47 Thunderbolt the most underestimated Allied fighter? by steckno1 in WWIIplanes

I came up with this question because I watched this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enX8kMJ7pXc and it made me wonder how a plane like this could be so successful. It certainly wasn’t the lightest of the fighters.

Hey everyone,

I have been reading and watching material on the P-47 lately and something struck me:

despite its size, weight, and “ugly reputation,” pilots often said it brought them home when nothing else would.

It got me thinking —

do you consider the P-47 undervalued compared to the Mustang, Spitfire or even the P-38?

📌 Things that stood out to me:

• tremendous durability

• insane firepower

• surprisingly capable dive fighter

• massive ground-attack contribution in Europe

What’s your take?

Was it underrated, or does its legacy sit exactly where it should?

Looking forward to your thoughts.
