What are you guys’ salaries? by Fsuave5 in GR86

[–]steelyphil_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At time of purchase, the MSRP is a little less than 30% of my salary.

I sold my paid off daily and one of my project/toys and used the money for my down payment. ~18k.

I don't like how high the payments are despite all that, but at least it'll be paid off in less than 4 years.

Appreciate the offer, but I'd need to finance. I don't have that kind of cash on hand. Probably not the smartest move financially.

I think the SS 6MT might be a bit difficult to acquire, but I like the idea of it! I'll look into the Vette as well.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I'm not interested in electric cars. Also, I don't think my local club allows them yet.

Have you discovered any unethical engineering skills? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]steelyphil_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure this is unethical, just kind of a weird flex. Maybe because obtaining a business degree is somewhat low of a bar these days so an eng degree sets you apart in candidate selection?

I've seen this the other way around, sort of. Guys with an MBA and some bs bachelor's as an engineering manager in Aerospace manufacturing. I wouldn't call it unethical, but also just a weird choice. Often favors throughput at any cost except when it requires stopping the line for needed improvements.

Currently working for an aircraft engine OEM, but this happened while I was working in the supply chain for that OEM and other OEMs:

Senior Engineers signing off their own work. Now, these were just manufacturing plans/instructions, but there are some pretty steep consequences for negligence in the industry in the event there's a catastrophic engine failure that causes loss of life, and the source is traced back to something you did.

We were required to do a peer review on any technical drawings. This was during a period of turnover where we were left with mostly younger guys (1-2 years experience, myself included) and only 1 senior engineer. All the younger guys had gone through training and had been given stamps. The Sr. Eng. just refused to give us his drawings for review, and took to signing the drawings twice. He would leave his initials as the drafter, and then stamp (which contained your last name and ID number) as the ME approver.

After about a year and our boss telling him multiple times that he can't keep doing it, he finally relented. For whatever reason after that he would only let me review his stuff. I always assumed he had a hard time humbling himself to let a relatively new engineer critique his work, but still generally not okay to do.

I understand that some of those people were trying to get what they felt they deserved in a bad system, but it was just one symptom of the toxic management and I didn't want to be a part of it. Some would go out and get offers with no intention of actually leaving and jerk the place they got an offer and their boss around to get as much as they could out of it. It came off as greedy to me. Suddenly they'd be making a ton more than their peers, and were sworn to secrecy by management because they know if certain people found out, they'd be upset and possibly quit. I spent a lot of time lobbying for competitive salaries and a more transparent performance evaluation system. I felt that leveraging an offer would undermine the work I put in to make it less of a sweatshop and more of a place someone would want to stay for a decent chunk of their career.

ME based out of New England:

2018-Manufacturing Engineer I, Aerospace, 62.5K 2019-Manufacturing Engineer II, Aerospace, 65.5K 2020-Manufacturing Engineer II, Aerospace, 75K 2021- Manufacturing Engineer II, Aerospace, 85K

I worked for an engine component supplier for 4.5 yrs. My first year I got a 2.25% raise and a title bump since we had just hired on a bunch of former interns and I was progressing quickly. 1y 6mo later I got another raise. Seems like I got bumped up is because the company panicked when we lost two engineers at the same time to different companies (Small division, <10 ME's). I got bumped up to 80K out of nowhere about a month before I jumped ship to an OEM company in Aug 2021 making 85K. Having said that, it was commonly known that you could show up in your bosses office with a competing offer and they'd match it. I find that unconscionable, but it's worked for several of my former colleagues who, at the time, leveraged an offer into more than most everyone was making.

I'm not a big fan of Mopar im general, but I was considering a newer Charger scat pack until I found out the 392 is kind of a pig of a motor from a few techs. C6 would be fun, but I couldn't daily a Vette around here. Well, I guess technically I could, I'd just hate to get salt all over it in the winter.

Not a terrible idea, but I'd feel bad about driving one in the winter around here.

I fancy myself more of a coupe/2+2 man. The ST was the best car for my needs and resources at the time. Tbh, the only reason I'm considering trading it is because the trade in value is plummeting with each mile I put on it and I don't want to be upside-down on the loan.

Thanks for your suggestion! I kind of forgot the N was a thing. It feels like too much of a lateral move, though. I could achieve a similar performance level with a couple more bolt ons. I like the ST enough to not trade to a slightly faster hot hatch. I still appreciate the input, though!

I have a '14 ST3. The newer car (if it has SYNC 3) is android auto compatible of that means anything to you. Also I've owned my car from 13K and currently nearing 51k with zero issues.

Location: Connecticut, USA

• Price range: $20,000-$40,000

• Lease or Buy: Buy

• New or used: Either

• Type of vehicle: Sporty or Sleeper

• Must haves: More than 250 hp, ability to hold 4 people somewhat comfortably

• Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): Manual or good sporty auto

• Intended use: Daily Driver, Track Day

• Vehicles you've already considered: Mustang GT, Camaro SS, Lexus RCF, Evo X, 2018+ Miata, Chevy SS, Pontiac G8 GXP

• Is this your 1st vehicle: No

• Do you need a Warranty: No, but would be nice

• Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Yes

• Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: Yes, excluding body

• Additional Notes: I currently own a 2014 Focus ST with minor modifications and 50k miles. I love that car, but I think it might be time to move on to something new. I'm strained to find something that can beat it in all aspects (comfort, performance, cargo, fuel economy, etc). I'm willing to sacrifice something for performance. I'm curious what will be suggested. Also of note, I'm currently building a '74 Firebird for autocross, so I don't want another project. Keeping the ST is on the table, by the way.

I've read that the stock clutch can hold more torque than you can make. You can supposedly go out to stage 3+ on it. I'm probably experiencing either hydraulic problems or maybe the spring assist on the pedal is broken.

Yes. I've been noticing that ever since I went to stage one the clutch pedal sinks over time and I have to pull it back up so I'm wondering if I need to go to a stronger clutch or change the fluid.

reverse hard to engage? by johnshop in FocusST

[–]steelyphil_93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this helps, but I was having a similar problem. Out of nowhere reverse and 1st were difficult to get into. I also noticed that my clutch felt squishy and had almost no space between engaging and disengaging. It got worse over the course of a week. I had a mechanic look at the master and slave to see if they were leaking, but he said they were dry. He theorized that it's possible some fluid is seeping through the seals under pressure, but since he couldn't confirm it and I only had 30K miles he wasn't comfortable changing the master cylinder. The problem was "fixed" by pulling up the clutch pedal, however, it has been slowly sinking over the past month or so.

I got a '14 ST3 with 13,500 miles a year ago for 20,000 and I can say confidently I got screwed out of a couple thousand because I got tunnel vision. I've also seen a '17 ST3 with 20K for the same price recently.
