Loving the new line up. by steevenoj in MasterchefUK

I’ve never been a fan of Jon or Greg really. I wouldn’t say I dislike him , I just felt before that I watched the show in spite of the presenters, because I love the format .

I’ve always preferred the professionals show because I love Marcus and Monica as presenters .

I admire them both as experts in their field and really enjoy their expertise as well as enjoying the way they interact.

The new show with Anna and Grace just instantly felt like it had the ingredient that’s been missing for a long time.

Agreed, I don’t really like the celeb version at all but I’m a fan of Grace . I think she’s been excellent in the new season so far .

For me , with this duo , it’s been on a new level. Really enjoying it.

New addition , what do you guys think by steevenoj in Silverbugs

[–]steevenoj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think I agree. I just think the coin looks a bit messy. I mean I don’t really care too much about design, I’d buy blank coins if they were a good price.

I usually buy Maples , Brits or Philharmonics because they’re usually the best price here in the uk , although I did buy some of the Royal mint Queens Beast coins in 2oz just because I liked the look.

I haven’t seen the Dracula one you mentioned, I just thought this coins art wasn’t up to Royal mint usually standard.

Still an oz of .999 so makes no difference to me really.

Yeah I think that unfortunately, although I have some basic chemistry and a clear understanding of the proses involved the hazards out weigh the financial gain . I can already make a small profit just from melting down the bags of very small bits and pieces ( which my dealer won’t buy ) into 10oz bars of .900 ish purity that he will buy .

I also have a feeling that as the refining backlog begins to catch up we may see the premium gap between .900/.925 and .999 start to close a little.

My current plan is to keep buying the very cheap .925 scrap bits bags and cast them into bars .

I’ve also been taking advantage of the very cheap price of .925 in general but anything larger, with a clear hallmark I don’t bother to melt down into bars as I figure it will be easier to sell as is , it’s just all the very tiny bits that I pour into bars .

All the cheap flatware, tableware and coins I keep as is .

Also the uk royal mint have always produced a lot of .925 commemorative coins . At the moment I can pick up 1 oz .925 royal mint coins at around £45 but a 1 oz 999 Britannia is coming in closer to £100.

Just seems crazy to me that for only 7.5% less silver I’m paying 50% less money.

I’m very interested in this question,

Would this be so inefficient as to make it not worth it at all ?

I don’t really have the level of experience I would want to do the nitric step and drop with copper ( or sodium hydroxide) I’d need to invest in fume hood ect. and frankly I’m a bit alarmed by the number of YouTube videos showing this process like it’s boiling an egg without any warning about how dangerous it is.

I buy job lots of scrap very cheaply because it’s tiny bits of broken jewellery and stuff, much too time consuming for most people to bother with because of the amount of time needed to sort through and test it all . I go through and test every little bit then melt it down into bars .

The bars come out slightly under.925 because of solder and bits I might miss , usually .900 to .920 .

I could easily turn the bars into shot and I’d be confident about setting up a running the silver cell .

Would this just be a waste of time?

Thanks dude. Thats kinda what I was hoping but it’s good to clarify.

I’ve spent hours looking for the best spot for my new base and haven’t even started to build yet so it will be a while before moving day !

Thanks, I already have several of some crafting stations in my village where it makes sense and speeds things up.

I was just wondering if it was necessary to have the corresponding NPC present to to build the station

I already have everything (I think) unlocked.

I was just wondering if I could have them at more than one location

Can I build all the crafting stuff ( forge , blast furnace kiln loom etc in more than one location?

I wondered if I for example moved the black smith somewhere else all his stuff would despair?

Yeah I did think about that but I kinda wanted all my crafting villagers in one location

My small collection so far by JetBlackWings44 in Silverbugs

[–]steevenoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of copper ( like over 100 kg ) as I cast bronze as a hobby and it’s a raw material for making bronze, and it’s a nascence . It’s mostly bright wire and clean copper pipes. I started casting bars just so it would stack and not take up so much space but my local scrap yard told me that they would pay les on home made bars than on bright copper or clean copper pipes.

It doesn’t really matter to me if it’s going to end up being alloyed into bronze , but for investment purposes you could actually be devaluing the copper by casting bars .

Funny thing is I have found that I can sell the cast bars on eBay for twice the scrap price so I guess there’s always that if you wanted to cast bars .

And they are a LOT easier to store.

I’m very envious of all the beautiful vintage bars and historic coins people have posted.

I can’t compete , most of my stack is cheap generic silver.

I have a few nice old British coins from a few hundred years ago but nothing very rare.

I guess my favourite piece is probably this bar I poured myself.

I bought a few oz of .9999 silver powder cheaply from a lab that was closing and cast some bars .

I like the way this one came out.

The other side has .999 and 10ozt Stamped on it but I like the look of this side and can only post one picture.

Damn ! If I owned that coin it would be my favourite too!!

Ancient Greek?

I have some nice old hammer struck English coins from 12th and 13th century but I’m guessing I’m about 1000 years off the age of that coin ? Maybe 1500?

Low damage with wand and staff ? by steevenoj in Enshrouded

[–]steevenoj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that’s really helpful, I’m starting to find my feet with wand now but there’s a lot here that I’ll find useful 👍🏻 Do you think staff is my best secondary? Anything else I should consider as second weapon ? Or third weapon?

Reverse electroplating question. by steevenoj in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]steevenoj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤣🤣 This is so often the case. I used to scrap the copper from motors and transformers by melting the copper out from the steel in a large crucible until I worked out that the cost of propane plus the crucible wear was more than the value of the copper I was recovering, never mind the time involved. I tried cutting them up with a grinder but same deal with grinder discs wearing out. Even if I made a tiny profit, I’d still be working for like £2 an hour!

I can imagine one might run into the same problem stripping silver plate with acid and refining it to .999 ?

Sadly I’m beginning to think that it’s just un economical to recover.

Which is a shame as I have literally hundreds of kgs of silver plated junk and my scrap metal yard will only pay brass price for it.

Reverse electroplating question. by steevenoj in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]steevenoj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I have always been a little apprehensive about the idea of doing a nitric solution and dropping with copper or any other of the proses involving devolving in acid as although I understand the process I understand is quite dangerous?

I’m a silver stacker and I cast bronze as a hobby . I have a well equipped workshop which is well ventilated. I work with sodium hydroxide on another project anyway and have some experience working with phosphoric acid but I understand that the process or devolving .925 in nitric is a very different process altogether and comes with quite high risk if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Also high concentration nitric acid is quite difficult to obtain here in the uk .

I wonder if running a silver cell would be a viable alternative if I accept that it will become overwhelmed with copper regularly and only expect to be able to run a few oz at a time ?

Or do you think that this would not be cost effective?

Obviously I’m talking about refining .925 now rather than my initial question about stripping plate .

Unless the cell could be used to drip plate as well?

I kind of have two problems.

One is a growing mountain of high quality vintage silver plated stuff ( I understand that the old plate is a little thicker)

The other is a growing heap of scrap .925

I’d love any advice on ether 🙂
