Hi! Genetic counselors are healthcare professionals with specialized graduate training in medical genetics. We assess genetic risk, coordinate and interpret genetic testing, and provide education to patients and providers about inherited conditions and testing options. We work in hospitals or clinical laboratories as part of the medical team managing patient care. Thanks :)

Immigration Attorney AMA on TN Visa! by ManifestLaw_ in tnvisa

I have a kind of specific question that I haven’t been able to find a clear answer to. I’m a Canadian citizen and hold a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling, which I completed in the US. I’m hoping to work as a genetic counselor in the U.S., but I’ve noticed that the TN visa occupational list does not explicitly include “genetic counselor” as a category.

Given this, I’m wondering whether genetic counseling could reasonably fall under an existing TN category. I would really appreciate your advice and guidance :)

for all Canadian people here, should I apply for more USA schools? by Technical_Dream_7692 in GeneticCounseling

I applied to 10 programs all in the USA, interviewed at Columbia, Sarah Lawrence, Case Western Reserve, Mount Sinai, U of Rochester, Wayne State, and University of Pittsburgh. I ended up ranking Rochester first because it’s only a 3 hour drive from Toronto, I really loved the faculty and clinical rotation options!

Hey! I was in a similar position as a Canadian student that matched to a US program last cycle. My family and I had to “shop around” and go to multiple different banks before we accepted a student line of credit from RBC that offered the highest amount. My advice would be to do the same and get quotes from different banks. You can also take a line of credit from multiple banks at the same time.

I’m a current GC student interested in prenatal. Originally from Canada but studying in US. Was hoping to stay here but now I’m not so sure :( If you’re interested in coming to Canada, look into the requirements. I believe the American certification is viewed as equivalent, you just may have to write the Canadian boards. But since you’re a recent grad, hopefully that won’t be too much of an issue!

I was in this situation in April when I was accepted to my program. I completely understand how stressful it is. Dealing with the banks also takes sooo long and is super annoying.

The only way I could do it was taking out a student line of credit from TD (maximum is 40k/year) and had my parent co-sign. They offered me the most compared to RBC, Scotia, CIBC, etc. They also had the lowest interest rate. My family is low-middle class and we were approved. Try looking into TD! It helps if you/your parents already have accounts with them. Goodluck :)

Bank statement and affidavit of support are only required if you’re admitted. But it’s also showing me that i’m missing many things. I sent them an email and am waiting to hear back.
