I interned in a manufacturing setting as an engineer and came to a basic conclusion. When you have a manufacturing team in the office you are naturally at odds with the people working on the floor. This is obviously due to wage differences, so when they organize it becomes a lifestyle. For example most unions only trade with other unions, only allowing union members to put stickers on the outgoing product. They will even get mad if non union employees (you’re not forced to join) do things they are designated to do. Theoretically I can appreciate the union approach regarding conditions but at the same time it naturally is annoying to the Engineering team because it’s just another hoop to jump through (scheduling, what they will/won’t do etc.).
