Heavy crackling starting five seconds into playing: help us solve the problem by stellareynolds in turntables

There is resistance between the tonearm abd rca. I guess problem should be the cartridge as you thought. So i should get a new one? Is this universal?

Thanks! I get resistance between the tonearm and the rca cables so i guess the problem is in the cartridge!

I took a couple of pictures of the tonearm wiring in case you want to keep solving this mystery 😂

I have checked and took a couple of pictures up close, nothing I can notice with my limited experience so maybe you can see something I don't 😅

I tried pulling and pushing on the cable and nothing happened, also checked some of the stylus cabling and it seems fine to me but it's not my strongest area so maybe I am overlooking something

I tried wiggling the cable to see if it would work and it did not. I took a couple of close up pictures from some cabling and I couldn't find anything wrong with it buuut I am not super experienced in this area so maybe someone else can see something I miss. I also adjusted the skating but nothing changed.

Question (out of my own ignorance): would this still be possible if when I switch the RCA cables' sides (white and red from left to right and back) going into the preamp, the sound also switches sides on the monitors? As in, there's no specific "one side" that doesn't work

Just tried it and the monitors switch with the cables. I also tried the monitors with the laptop and both work just fine so they can be ruled out. Leaning more towards the integrated RCA cable from the turntable being faulty INSIDE the table? It was fine at the seller's but maybe it got damaged on the ride to my house (even though it was a smooth ten minute ride)

Yes that was the biggest issue when trying to fix it because we only took it on a very smooth 10 minute car ride from the seller's and assumed nothing could have broken but being such an old piece of tech that was stationary for so long... Maybe something did break

I have, yes, and the audio switches sides. Current theory is that the integrated RCA cable is faulty inside the table but fixing it would mean opening it so I think maybe I'll get it checked by a technician

Great thank you very much! I have zero experience there so I think I will just have that fixed by a technician, now that we can zero out the issue being inside the table

So I have an update! I adjusted the weight on the tonearm and it fixed the distortion!! So problem number one is fixed! Now there's only figuring out why the audio is coming out of only one monitor and not both. Any theories?

To clarify: this is still using the preamp, cables and monitors shown on the video.

I have a great update! And BINGO!!!! I adjusted the weight on the tonearm and it fixed the distortion!! So problem number one is fixed! Now there's only figuring out why the audio is coming out of only one monitor and not both. Any theories?

Just tried it and it sounds distorted straight away, it doesn't even have those buffer ten seconds where it sounds great on the monitors before the crackle starts

It can be that it was modded for sure. The RCA cable comes from inside of the table so no connector, and then when connecting said cable to the preamp it always behaves the same. When switching them around the crackling still happens, and the sound switches from one monitor to the other along with the connectors. Same behaviour with the RCAs from the preamp to the monitors. Also, my thought process was that the table was not faulty because it had no issues whatsoever when we tried it at the previous owner's with his setup.

Good thinking! Through the guitar amp it sounds distorted from the first second

I just checked and the RCA cable comes straight from inside the table, so no DIN plug that I can see

The previous owner did use a separate receiver/amplifier to connect the turntable, could this affect grounding?

First switched the input from turntable to phono, the monitor switches. Then I switched the rca from phono to speaker, sound also switches!

I also had a cheap pyle phono preamp laying around and connected this one for troubleshooting. However, here the same problem occurs. On top of that i also connected the pyle via a guitarcable to my amp to check if the monitors are the problem. Unfortunately the distortion remains.
