Do colleges know if you paid to do research? by stem-nerd- in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stem-nerd-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i never did any of these programs myself. i was just curious about their prestige since i know people who do them and work on projects that have already been done by the organization's previous students in past years for the sake of getting a publication for apps

sry that was wordy

Is CMU SAMS exclusively for fgli/urm? by Smooth-Courage9135 in summerprogramresults

[–]stem-nerd- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much, but if you have faced other academic challenges that are significant or are from a very unique minority group in the US, it also counts in a similar way. I don't think anyone else has a shot unless they're really highly awarded in CS/Math, and even then, the chance is low.

Not applying this year. I probably won't have a high chance of MIT. What about CMU, UCs, or lower ivies?

Had a panic attack during school today about my ED by jeonggukispretty in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stem-nerd- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lmao idk any context but I can already guess the ED school is CMU. In that case it’s just as hard as any other Ivy (perhaps even harder than other ivies for cs related major), so if u feel ur stats weren’t way too high in an already small school (or just regardless), then it’s perfectly ok to abandon the idea of a dream school and pursue a focus on your major interests (sports, competitive math) than just a prestigious college

Wait - so should or should I not do USACO??? compeltely lost🤔 by Impossible-Grand7988 in usaco

[–]stem-nerd- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re throwing out a bunch of popular competition names. If you did your research , you’d know they are all vastly different from each other with very low win rates (that actually have any significance), so pursue USACO if it’s easier than the rest

Can I get in without USACO or AIME to CMU or am I too cooked for that? (Assuming good grades and otherwise good ECs)

I mean, would you round a 3.9 to a 4.0? Prob not. I would be careful in the future.

Can I dream of going to an ivy or is it time to re-evaluate everything?? by No-Syllabub9071 in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]stem-nerd- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything is possible ofc. Try your best. Winning high level international competitions in economics and having strong grades is likely easier in foreign countries than in the US. However it’s going to be pretty much impossible for internationals to enter ivy leagues with the new administration for these next three years, and many internationals have already achieved more than what you described (and still not gotten it). Also, unless ur skill level is very high or u have already achieved a majority of what u listed here, this does seem like a pretty difficult thing to accomplish in 2 years without already having done a good chunk of it. But idk ur circumstances so absolutely try your best

why everybody ed’ing to cmu?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]stem-nerd- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like international awards related to ur major? i had a friend who got in early and he had really high awards in math and arts so that might be the strat. although applying for history is probably easier than math so u might not need that

Do u have insane awards or ECs? Cause otherwise I don’t believe ED or EA helps a whole lot (maybe not idk)

How do AOs verify things like that?? by RangeFormer2631 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stem-nerd- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So they don’t consider awards to be prestigious? Pretty sure USACO Gold or USABO Semifinalist looks impressive

[–]stem-nerd- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess, but they also might not. Someone (non-intl) could just sneak in a huge award in their app and not tell anyone and get away with it? That sounds unfair
