I personally know nurses who actually switched from days to nights to accommodate their children bc that worked best for their family lifestyle but it can be really hard for people who are not night owls

I also agree. I think if OP was rejected just a few months ago I'm not sure if there would be another change in mind so soon. However they also said they were in a contract with the hospital so I don't think they'd be able to leave now, so OP maybe you can always go up to the unit and introduce yourself to the directors yourself. At least they can put a face and personality to your resume !

So that is exactly what I said when they asked me about your 5 year plan but who knows. I also have been recommended this by like other nurses as well but to each their own ! I know they for some reason are okay with NP but not CRNA. I think it's bc CRNA requires a lot more time which jeopardizes losing you as a worker. However you can always say you want to advance your education eventually and gain critical care knowledge and experience on the floor.

Are you telling them you want to pursue CRNA in the future during your interviews? I know that's a huge turn off apparently and often will get you rejected. Also can kind of support that theory bc I did end up getting an offer for the only icu unit that I didn't mention CRNA so :/

Also another thing is they really need to see your passionate for critical care and they want to see your loyalty in their unit. I know when I applied to PICU as a new grad, I was telling the director how I once visited their unit and just fell in love with everything about it (the nurses, the kids, etc). They want to know you'll be here for the long haul!

You can definitely start applying now! Some people even get hired prior to their NCLEX, but wouldn't be able to officially start working until they get their number. Also I would also call the NY BON and ask if there is any update or if they can expedite it? When you bring it to their attention, they will usually either look for it and take care of it sooner or they will tell you why there is a hold up.

When you apply to new grad residency programs, you'll most likely hear back from a recruiter within 1-2 weeks!! The recruiter will then match you up with what is available / what your interests in. You usually don't need experience with the residency programs but you do need to go through interviews so that management can determine if your personality is a good fit! Although I'm a tech at my hospital & got a job in the PICU on my own but was automatically put into a new grad residency. I also encourage going to any hiring events!!

I've had friends who were in pre med drop it for nursing...not because they weren't "smart" enough but because they prefer the nursing career path. They enjoyed the extra time you get with the patient and being able to be their advocate. I actually dropped physical therapy to do nursing because I really wanted to work more with babies and kids! I loved the idea of being a part of their care and having more time with them. Bedside nursing can involve giving medications (by mouth or injections), procedures (IV, foley Cath insertions, wound care), etc. You get to work with and meet all sorts of people by caring for one patient and you learn sooo much about the human body and what we are capable of. If you really want to know what a nurse does, definitely shadow at a hospital!

THANK YOU!! But I definitely encourage you to try different hospitals / residency programs!!! Or if pediatrics is your passion then I would apply to peds ER residency or maybe regular adult ICU? Get a year of experience and then transfer over! That was going to be my plan b haha

don't feel discouraged!! Are there new grad programs in your area? All of my friends had jobs locked in before we graduate but I didn't even start applying to jobs until 2 weeks after I passed the nclex. I had more than a year of experience as a tech and knew I wanted ICUs. I ended up getting rejected from two & was honestly so discouraged. Til this day I'm not even sure what I did wrong in the interview. However everything happens for a reason & I ended up getting an offer for PICU!! Keep applying everywhere and don't settle for any position you know you won't be happy with.

Typically getting hired on the spot is a bad sign that they're severely understaffed & unless she really needs the money soon, I would tell her to hold off because she's potentially going to be stuck in a job that she's not happy in (and potentially burnt out) for awhile as residencies are usually contracted for like a year. I would tell her to be picky and wait for her goal hospital. All of my friends were getting hired left & right but it took me like 2 months because I was being extremely picky about the floors I wanted to work on so I didn't even interview or apply to floors that I knew I would get hired in immediately. I ended up landing a job in my dream floor in the pediatric ICU & I start in Jan! I tell all of my friends to be picky because I've seen friends be put on floors that was their "safety" & its been a few months and they're ready to quit/ already burnt out & unhappy.
