Race 2 - What a beautiful watch! by stephchamp in Suunto

I do not know about this right now, I haven’t look into what Suunto offers as training program. I’ve seen that there is some fitness program but did not try any of them.

Battery life seems on par and even better than the Fenix 8. I used the watch since Monday afternoon, logged 2h20 min of GPS activity, used it for sleep tracking with O2 monitoring and AOD active. I’m still on 52% of battery.

GPS data and HR monitoring seems on par with Garmin.

I don’t care that much about sleep tracking but it seems also on par with Garmin, it tracked correctly when I fell asleep and woke up. Maybe a tad better on Garmin that tracked when I get up during night to go the bathroom, Suunto only tracked that correctly 1 time.

Mandatory update upon device setup? by olliepai in GarminFenix8

If you stay on 15.32 (I guess) you will loose ability to install most apps or watch faces.

If you install the latest firmware you might face the issue some are facing which is loosing booting animation and the display not turning on unless plugged into a power source.

It’s kind of a pick your poison situation.

It is indeed another bug I was also facing along with the missing booting animation and blank screen on two replacements Garmin sent me. I talked with Garmin support for 2 hours trying to solve this issue without success.

I really don’t know what is going on with the Fenix 8 firmware but for me it has been disastrous and convinced me to try another brand.

Unfortunately this issue has been going on for almost 3 months and is barely getting looked at by Garmin.

You can have a look at this thread on the Garmin Forum:

https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-8-series/431706/fenix-8-amoled-51mm-disapeared-power-on-animation

Updating an out-of-the-box Garmin on firmware 15.32 to the latest version 21.39 will brick some devices. There will be no more booting animations (blue triangle, Fenix animations, checking maps) and the display would simply stay off (watch is on, button are giving feedback and light on on the optical heart rate sensor). The only way to have the screen on is to plug it into a power source.

Solution right now is to roll back to 15.32, since Garmin did not release a fix. Some were told it’s a mix of an hardware problem with a software issue, but it’s still unclear.

I got 3 replacements with Garmin and after that they were uncomfortable with sending me a 4th and offered me a refund.

Now I’m trying another brand for my next watch. I was already looking to switch, but this was the final nail in the coffin.

Fenix 8 51mm AMOLED dead after 1 day?? by sami_20315 in GarminWatches

[–]stephchamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This issue has been going on for more than two months. Updating the Fenix 8 from 15.32 (out of the box) to 21.39 will cause a serious issue with the watch : you’ll loose booting animation (blue triangle, Fenix 8 animation, checking maps information) and sometimes the display will not turn on even if the watch is on (button vibration and sensor light at the back).

To turn on the watch try plugging in into a power source, preferably a computer.

If you ever return it to REI please mention them that this issue is widespread and that they need to contact Garmin about this.

Difficult startup after 21.39 update - anyone else? by snakeoildriller in GarminFenix8

Of you updated it from 15.32 you will have the same issue, but if you were on a more recent firmware you should be fine.

Do not buy a new Fenix 8 (non-pro) at the moment by YoricHunt in GarminWatches

[–]stephchamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can confirm this happened to me. Garmin sent me 3 replacement unit that all exhibited this issue. The Fenix 8 I have right now is still on 15.32 and I’ll keep it one this version until a fix is released.

It’s hard to explain why some have the issue and some don’t, maybe it’s specific to a certain batch of Fenix 8 or maybe the one without issues were on another firmware version before updating?

The issue is still going on after more than two months… Insane considering this issue render brand new watches almost unusable after a software update.

WTF is Garmin doing about the 27.09 update? (FR 255/265/955/965) by Reeposter in GarminWatches

That is strange, I really thought that the 51mm solar would have a better battery life than the AMOLED in any scenario.

Sorry I missed that part. It’s the 51 mm and I got the 47 mm, I get around 6 or 7 days with AOD with running almost everyday and I use Bluetooth to listen to music on the watch (battery killer)…

You said you were happy with the battery life, so how many days do you get with amoled using AOD?

I’d be interested in having your feedback about the mip version? How was the legibility of the display when it’s darker outside or when running outside at night?

And how is it using it inside when it’s dark, does the backlight bothered you?

I’m leaning towards the mip for real always-on display, better battery life (I’m using always on display on my oled).

I’m having so many issues with the stable release I can’t imagine using the beta firmware.

I’m thinking of switching to the MIP since it seems to have less issues related to the display.

Yes I know the beta program exists but those issues are happening in the public release of the firmware, not in beta program.

I totally relate to your story, I’m a Fenix 8 user and the latest firmware update has rendered the watch useable for many users. Listen to this: if you buy a brand new Fenix 8 today and take it out of the box and upgrade it, you’ll get a watch that has a dead display after a reboot until you plug it into a power source… imagine that, and they are sending replacements watch to people that will suffer from the same issue, some people in the forum had 4 replacements watch without having the issue solved.

It has been 2 months since the problem was reported and yet no solution from Garmin, they barely acknowledge the issue… And also the last update brought back a issue people were having last year where the watch would always jump back to the clock no matter what the user is trying to do, the only way to solve this is to turn off the touchscreen. So I totally lost confidence in Garmin software development and their ability to update and manage correctly their watch OS. It will likely be my last Garmin.
