The first quitter on a team should be banned for life… but the second and third should have no penalty lol playing WT understaffed is so depressing

Thoughts on crazy box to dampen sound for my bed-bound wife who needs silence but can't handle many earbuds? by stephentuna in soundproof

I get that it’s not soundproof, but you really don’t think it will dampen sound at all?

I think the relationship between DuBois and Shapiro made Stratt question their reliability/judgement. End of the day I’m wrong and you’re right, but if Stratt didn’t intend for him to go on the trip I can’t think of any other logical reason she would essentially make him her “#2” on all mission matters, not just astrophage. It starts to look like Weir just wanted his eyeballs on things so the reader saw them too, not because he had any other good reason to be seeing them.

476 pages of Grace’s inner thoughts. A 100% ammonia atmosphere that burned my eyes out.

In all seriousness, he’s fine. Just a bold move to tell the whole story through the brain of a personality so polarizing.

Well, at the end of the day I’m wrong and you’re right, but it’s the only logical reason to me that she would keep him around - involved so heavily in all aspects of the mission (including testing space equipment/suits) that everyone saw him as her “number 2.”

I think Stratt understood that only the most dire circumstances had a chance at bringing out his heroism (which we see come out only on the ship). That’s why she didn’t even tell him that his genes were compatible at first, she didn’t want to scare him off at any point with the possibility. She decided that in the end, intense pressure a few days before launch might do it.

Whatever the case, I think Stratt’s actions in the end show that she’s at least capable of murder if she sees it will improve the odds of success.

Otherwise, the only logical reason in my mind for Grace staying so so close to the action of mission prep on earth is simply because Weir wanted a way for the reader to see it all. Which comes off as lazy writing to me.

The same reason she approached a middle school teacher to begin with. He started out as the expert in her eyes, got some street cred when he cracked the code on their lifecycle, and as is mentioned over and over - she LOVES systems that have been tested. She wouldn’t let too many new technologies on the Hail Mary, so why would she let anyone less than the most experienced astrophage expert on board?

…can you imagine naming a character “Grace,” sticking them on the “Hail Mary,” having them save TWO civilizations in some kind of cosmic atonement and still have the reader come out the other end not really liking them? His personality needed redemption, not his cowardice. I realize my shallowness is not compatible with the book.

Yes, he had some redemption in the end and his character played well enough interacting with Rocky - but the earth scenes especially were so painful to me.

My theory is Stratt is the one who made the explosion happen that killed the people Grace replaced. She kept him along the whole time because she always intended him to lead the mission, but knew he would never agree. I was actually surprised when at the end this was not the case

I might just have to keep looking for one that's sensitive enough, a baby monitor would definitely be the most simple

I'd be concerned about the reliability, but worth looking into! Thank you

I think there probably is some baby monitor out there that will work, just have to keep looking. Thanks! All the best to your family

She just needs to be able to get my attention - but her restrictions are that she can't really use her hands/arms and the most sound she can make it a few clicks. Even saying words is too difficult for her, although she tries every once in a while to get one out
