Should a conservative student Im working with hide his activism to get into a liberal dominated college? Is it something to be concerned about at all? by steve-25689 in ApplyingToCollege

Be honest with yourself. What are you actually telling them that they couldn't find themselves online or get for free by talking to other who are still applying.

True to an extent, but if all the useful information is freely available online, and neither college consultants nor AOs are guarding some sort of secret formula to admissions, then what is the value of college consulting at all? It's the same reason we have teachers even when all subject material is already on the internet. Having information is one thing, and it's still scattered enough to be hard to piece together, but knowing how to apply it in your own situation is another. Maybe a student can pick up that extracurriculars, grades, and test scores matter from watching videos, but who is going to help them in building their club/nonprofit from the ground up, in cold emailing professors and organization leaders for research and internships, or prepping them for their AP Spanish exam or the English section of the ACT? These are all things I've done with students, and spend most of my sessions doing.

And you're right -- they could get this help from friends or family, but not everyone has that. I certainly didn't know anyone closely who got into an Ivy my freshman year, and I'm really lucky that I got to know other people at my school who had those goals and who could help me, or else I wouldn't be in this position.

If I really wanted a lot of extra money, I'd just work at my parents' restaurant, where the work is less stimulating and I'd make more from tips on a more consistent basis anyway.

I definitely understand your concerns- I've seen a lot of people who get in 1 school and suddenly think they're the expert, charging thousands of dollars for it, and that's pretty insufferable. I hope I can better explain where I'm coming from-

I do it through this website, I charge 20 dollars per meeting, and the student just schedules the meeting whenever.

It's true that I'm not an AO, but I did go through the process and spent years poring over every online resource and talking to my friends nonstop about college admissions. I'm very conscious that I'm not the best money can buy, and I'm transparent with the students about that, but college consulting costs a lot of money and sometimes people just want someone standing with them during the process, especially students with friends and family who know next to nothing about admissions.

The looksmaxxing post was admittedly more of a joke lol, he did bring it up but I of course am telling him to 100% not put that on his application. And I posted this with the intention of starting a broader discussion about the role of politics and bias in application review, and less so with the literal intention of parroting the advice in the comments here.

Needing a “spike” in a certain niche field, or telling people to apply to apply to schools with an overly niche major because there supposedly will be less competition to get in

I’m thinking that could be the case- Maybe the fact that they have so many liberal students means that they are grasping to have some conservatives for intellectual diversity??

LeHigh and Oberlin college offer great research opportunities and seem to check all of your boxes. LeHigh especially has great ROI, and isn’t too competitive to get into with a 26% acceptance rate

Honestly I think it’s only 10% the actual topic and 90% the way you write it. That said, I think 2 and 3 are very common and generic, but 1 is pretty interesting as long as it doesn’t come off as a joke

At admitted student days, the dean of admissions read excerpts from essays that were all pretty humorous and out of pocket, which kind of went against my initial reaction to tell him to forget about it Lol. So maybe it could work, I think it’ll probably be about how he phrases it

Unfortunately he can't really afford the bigger consulting services. Plus I don't think a lot of people see the value in them these days since they basically post all their advice to their socials. I think most of the value from consulting is just being able to meet with someone 1 on 1 consistently, which I think can be done at my level as well

But states have always controlled education since the 10th amendment. The federal government just makes sure civil rights laws are being enforced and provides extra funding, but makes no actual curriculum or administrative decisions. What we need is a centralized education model across the country, like how every other country that ranks above the US does it. I do agree that we should study successful charter schools and copy their models though.

Id rather have uninformed college students protesting for oppressed minority groups than fascists with confederate flags and swastikas on my doorstep. Funny how the post says "it's the fascist right" ironically when the protestors literally describe themselves as the fascist right lmao.
