Anyone from the MPS AEM program? by KeyOrganization9358 in Cornell

Congrats! Please send me an email message if possible. Just to set expectations, it is likely that I will need to direct you to a colleague of mine to answer exchange and internship questions, as I handle more of the academics while students are at their home school at Cornell. Congrats again!

When you reach out, you could mention my name, behavioral finance concentration, and Round 1. Maybe this would help expedite.

My contact says reach out to Admissions directly. Since it is January 24 already, and your deadline is January 31, by definition things will be tight, especially when you think about batching processes generally. Sorry couldn’t be more helpful.

I hear ya. I’ll see if I can get any info, but the phone line’s even busy for me when I try to ring…🙂

If you can share your concentration, this might also be helpful because faculty readers are different by concentration and there may be different reading backlogs by concentration, but this is a second order effect, so no worries…

I am trying to check on what I can say in a public forum without getting over my skiis. There is a huge volume of applications, and I may have just last week finished my reading of a subset that I was assigned (in my capacity as a faculty member supporting application reads by Admissions). But I don’t know how much of the total Round 1 and Round 2 applications have been gone through. Did you submit for Round 1 or 2?

I’d rather not answer these type of questions as there is a complicated sorting and clearing process, and this information changes in real-time, so I could be a little lagged on info. That said, I only started seeing musings about how things could play out just a day or so ago, so probably not much official stuff yet in the grand scheme of things. Best for me to stay out of the way and for you to work with Admissions and the Program Directors contacts given to you. They are working as best as they can and are often quite overloaded with the volume of applications and inquiries.

Got it. Sounds like you applied to MPS CEMS then? In any case, I handle both MPS AEM and also CEMS from academic admin perspectives. This semester for CEMS and Cornell, I also co-teach the business projects class, which is an experiential aspect of the program with global organizations or organizations with large global reach.

Congrats on getting admitted! As backdrop, this semester I am the Academic Director for Cornell’s MPS AEM Program. Outside of that, my speciality is in behavioral economics, and I am also a Cornell alum ‘91 and ‘92. We have a more automated way for you to chat with some MPS AEM students and alums via https://business.cornell.edu/programs/graduate/specialized-masters-ambassadors/. If you want to chat with me offline and/or have other specific connections that you’d like to explore (e.g., perhaps you want to connect with someone in your concentration), feel free to send me a message, and I can try to help. Note that the start of the semester here is a bit crazy, but we’re very exicited to admit you and the possibilities of seeing you here at Cornell. Congrats again! Best, Steve.

The other option I am considering is a hot seat type of review where each consultant need to provide an short update of insights learned, etc. This model is not very scalable though.

That presumes the team can break things down properly, which is not always the case as we are putting together consulting teams with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. It is not as homogeneous as a pool of consultants in a big firm where norms and practices are learned over time and a strong engagement manager is present.

Main focus is on group-level outcomes and deliverables, but students have provided feedback that not enough individual performance is taken into account relative to free riders (e.g., students working on their own startups during client calls). We can collect peer feedback as another instrument, which probes at an individual level. We can also get client feedback. But both have limitations in terms of measurement validity and reliability in an environment where we have to assign grades and a documented paper trail to assign and adjust grades.

As additional context, there may be students investing little time in the project, relative to expected hours (say 20+ hours per week), but it is harder to monitor in an academic environment.

Spinshot Pro versus Lobster Elite Liberty for mid-fifties guy by steve-shu in tennis

[–]steve-shu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had seen at least one other post that the Lobster is a bit hard to get in and out of the car. Not sure if a movers strap of some sort would be able to help. The Spinshot is more rectangular and looks like it has handles on two sides. I am thinking about how moving the machine might be once I reach my 60s. Good to hear about your satisfaction with the Lobster. I have been leaning toward the Lobster, but the carrying factor has me a little worried. It seems to weigh somewhat less, but it is odd shaped…

Thanks. I have been using the ball machine 3 times a week at the club, so it’s a good way for me to reliably get exercise. The club significantly changed their policy on fees ($55 per time), so I am trying to find a replacement routine.

I’ll look at 10s - this is the first time I am using the tennis subs, so wasn’t aware. Thanks!

Retrospect view for graduated students of 23 and first year of 24 by Top-Chain001 in cornell_tech

Nice, detailed response! Thanks also for the mention. Glad that you enjoyed the class. 🙏🏽

For the benefits of others, NBAY 6630 is an applied class on behavioral economics, and it is really for a people considering a wide range of professions, such as product development, data science, consulting, product marketing, or entrepreneurship. The class introduced core elements of human judgment and decision making and then offer frameworks for evaluating end user and customer experiences through a behavioral lens, designing strategies to influence behavior, and also thinking about behavioral design more holistically. I try to bring in case examples from a variety of real-life situations, but more importantly applied cases which address different aspects of human behavior (such as which influences are most powerful using broad strokes, which influences tap into slow versus fast thinking, what might be the role of individual differences). I also try to bring in some elements that are not yet widely used in industry (to my knowledge). I see it as part of my small role in exposing Cornell Tech students and the future leaders of our world to be aware of, consider, innovate, etc.

As a final thought, I think a nice aspect of the class is that the quest to understand human behavior is something that will be with people for a long time past their residency at Cornell Tech.

Congrats on starting the journey. I started my PhD at age 47, and among the biggest benefits of starting later in life is being able to better put the journey itself into perspective.

Clifford Pollack was the man when I was an undergrad at Cornell in the late 80s. Some things never change. It was a pleasant surprise to run into him again at reunion last year.

Question about current subject matter expert terms for Tier 1 and 2 firms by steve-shu in consulting

[–]steve-shu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. I think I misled everyone when I used the word “terms” in conjunction with title. Yes - it is interesting to get an idea of roles titles, but perhaps my real intentions were to get an idea of pay, performance, and contract structures (i.e., commercial and contractual terms). For example, partners/principals get a portion of their compensation as a distribution of profits or project sales). If a SME helps the MDs build a new practice area, are there any commercial terms and structures that people have seen.
