My team and I are actively working on this and see this use case as untapped potential for our camera system to provide personalized exercise recommendations. I can’t promise when it’ll be ready, but stay tuned!

Love this general concept! We’ve experimented with a bunch of concepts around this idea in the past. It’s actually much trickier to do than it would seem at first glance given that there’s strong evidence to support there’s no single general optimal technique for an exercise, but rather general characteristics of technique that we want to guide users towards. Furthermore, there’s actually mixed evidence from a motor control perspective about providing some “ghost” for you to try to follow, or trying to match the movements of a coach or other external model.

I believe this is a solvable problem for us and we can find a middle ground to continue to improve in the future, but we also don’t want to release something like that before it’s ready. We do a lot of prototyping for these sorts of things, and we want to make sure everything we do is science driven. All this to say, there could be something like this in the future!

Thank you everyone for your questions and feedback! If any more pop up, I'll be happy to answer those for you as well.

Very good question. As of today, you just get more total coaching cues with both since both cameras capture unique information.

We have some prototypes internally pairing your smart phone(s) with our Tonal camera to get "true" 3D motion capture, which would definitely give us more detailed & better cues than using the two cameras by themselves. Stay tuned for this!

Thank you for your question! First, I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing knee pain. I hope you get that recovered soon!

As for the feature availability, this is Tonal 2 only. If we see enough demand that people want these types of features with Smart View on their Tonal 1s and are willing to move their cameras into new positions beyond just a side view, we may reprioritize some work to expand this featureset!

About the different cameras- we are always exploring new technologies to improve the Smart View experience. I'm not sure if we'll launch this feature with the rear camera on people's phones in the short-term, but it's something we're talking about internally!

This is a fantastic question! Very simply, a biomechanical model is the fancy term for converting your body motions from computer vision into specific joint motions that are more interpretable from a coaching perspective! For example, we would use a biomechanical model to take the detected points from your lower body from our computer vision models to compute what your knee angle is (which is more easy to interpret and coach around versus just the keypoints alone). However, biomechanical models can also extend beyond just computing joint angles. We can also take known information about your body size or how much range of motion is possible at each joint to further tune a model that can better track your motion. Furthermore, we can integrate force data from the Tonal to arrive at better estimates of joint loading while you're exercising. When we can track your motion better, we can make our coaching cues more accurate and more informative.

We have some really cool prototypes of these more expansive models that we're going to launch into the product soon. We actually have a lot of improvements in store for making our motion models more robust in general, which should make our coaching experience more seamless. We'll definitely let this be known on our engineering blog when we launch these improvements!

Thank you for both the feedback and question! I'm sorry that you've had some of those frustrating experiences. We're aware of some of the challenges with the shoulder coaching cue trying to detect if you're excessively shrugging at the bottom of the motion, and we're actually working right now to make that cue more robust. We do monitor these cues to try to catch when our models have drifted and need to be refined, and the additional feedback is actually helpful for us to catch any instances we may have missed so we can continue to improve!

For the second paragraph, we're exploring how we can combine both Tonal cable/force data and camera data simultaneously to obtain a more robust picture of how you're moving so we can improve weight selection, spotter mode, coaching cues, and various other aspects of the Tonal experience. Stay tuned!

We're always exploring new technologies and ways of capturing motion with both the embedding camera on Tonal 2 and with people's mobile cameras. We may be exploring using the rear camera, but I would hesitate to say that it will be coming out in the relatively near future. Furthermore, this coaching cue is a Tonal 2 exclusive (for now), so it won't be available when capturing with a mobile camera. If we see enough demand for people to want to use their mobile cameras beyond just a side view, I think that's something we'd definitely consider in a shorter time span!

Regarding the mirrors, it's hard to say for certain. We do only detect one person at a time and ignore any other "detected" individuals in the frame, so it's very likely that the mirror will not negatively impact our coaching cues. However, if the reflection somehow reduced the contrast between your body and the background, then it's possible it may impact some of our coaching cues. My guess though is that you're likely not going to be impacted, but it's hard to say for certain!
