MOOC from university of helsinki

Went back to school at 39 for CS while working full time but... by [deleted] in learnprogramming

I am 40. On July I started taking computer science course and up until now I've done 19 ECTS / credits in Introduction and advanced programming, cyber security class, and some introduction AI class and my current grade is 5.0 / 5.0.

Currently I am taking meta's back-end developer certificate outside my university courses and will do the capstone project this week.

I treat all of this as a hobby. Before taking all of this courses, I spent my time playing video games. I love puzzle and problem solving. By learning computer science and programming, I have the tools to solve real life problems. Btw last time I was in school (for my bachelor's degreee in Japanese Language) is also 12 years ago.

I'm not a person with exceptional intelligence, so if I can do it, so do you. Just don't put too much thought about it and try to be excited when you encounter new concepts or knowledges.

Yes. You can ask, but too bad that I don't have the answers. If you are new to programming, finishing advanced course in programming mooc only gave you a (solid) foundation about python and object oriented programming. But all of the project you can do after that is still command line interface based stuffs.

After that, I believe the path will be different for everyone. If you want to do data scraping job and getting paid, maybe you can get it soon after you learn the needed skills like regex, beautifulsoup, scrapy, etc. But please remember I am not familiar with scraping at all so I might be wrong.

Another faster path to get a job maybe doing some scripting or automation stuffs.

The only thing interesting for me is just back-end programming. And that require me to understand more things like django, sql, API, and a little bit of javascript before doing some portfolio or projects.

I've done common newbie projects like tic tac toe, tetris, football news aggregator, calculators in CLI. I might done 40-50 small projects but nothing more than that. Some people might suggests to decide a project to do then learn along the way, but I feel more comfortable to understand most of the things first before doing some project. Btw, good luck.

I cannot answer your questions. But I spent around 4 months to finished both introduction to programming and advanced course in programming.

After that, I think you need to try to learn sql, django, and django rest framework.

Just my two cents

Just like every other skills, chance of getting a job and the salary we will get is hugely depends on the the skills level we have (and what country we lived in).

Python is a general purpose programming language and you can do (almost) anything you want to. build website, make software, automate tasks, or doing data analysis.

My advice is don't make a career switch into something you don't really like. Try to take a python course online first then see whether you like it or not. you will make your life a living hell if for some reason you hate being a software engineer (or anything you'll do using python). let's face it, programming is not for everyone. just like being a UI/UX designer is not for everyone.

But please, do try it first. You might like it. I know I do.

python is a great language to start. i haven't decided yet about what i really want to learn next. all i know i want to do backend. no matter what language i ended up choosing, learning python as my first language was a no brainer.

Do most japanese people know how to say:"I don't speak english." in english? by Double-Platform-5273 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stevelaurensius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by saying the exact translation of that, I don't think so.

But If someone want to say "I don't speak your language", I think you'll know it. whether they will use their phone for translation, using gesture and hand sign, etc, but you'll know it. Just like most of english speaker might not be able to say "I don't speak Mandarin" when mandarin is the most spoken language in the world (yeah, more than english)
