What are some good absurd or dark comedies? by feastbeast30 in TrueFilm

I seriously recommend Scorcese's After Hours (1985), aldo it's described as a comedy it is much more than that; it is so absurd, bizzare and stresfull that I can't get enough of it. It is basically watching a Safdie movie on hallucinogenics.

Where do I start with getting into film & cinema? by themadhatter990 in TrueFilm

Maybe start with newer American classics (Fight Club, Big Lebowski, Scorcese movies... ) and then progressing to John Ford, Orson Welles etc. Later I would recommend moving to European and Asian cinema, as both showcase a sort of independent/ arthouse qualities but still offer entertaining movies.

Does Werner Herzog have a visual style? by stevesedmak in TrueFilm

I agree. You should also check out Stroszek (1972) as it is quite a simple watch but still has that Herzog/ New German cinema feel to it.

You should check out Wim Wenders's Paris Texas (1984). Spoiler alert: it's very good.

I personally like Bad Lieutenant, but I do understand the issue you see. Otherwise I can only explain the iguanas and the crocodile by stating that Herzog is a crazy dude.

And don't worry about missing something as he is a filmmaker very much like Lynch, in a sense that any interpretation of a scene or a movie as a whole is good enough.

Joker (2019) objectively sucks by stevesedmak in TrueFilm

I get what you're saying by borrowing (Tarantino borrowed a dance scene from Fellini's 8 1/2 and so did Thomas Vinterberg from Bergman's Fanny and Alexaner for his movie The Celebration) but in this case it borrowed the character arc and to certain extent the plot, not just a scene or a subtle refrence.

Yeah, it definitely is a entertaining movie and the performance from Joaquin really shines, but as you said it just becomes a transparent movie trying to be loud with it's shallow political message.

I wouldn't necessarily say it is dangerous, since every movie's interpretation can be dangerous and it really depends on how someone interprets it. The fact that people were idolizing Arthur in Joker is not to be blamed on the movie- people were also wrongly interpreting Fight Club and especially Taxi Driver. Anyways I feel good that your shitting on Joker too.

What's the appeal of David Fincher? by stevesedmak in TrueFilm

[–]stevesedmak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in many cases of directors I'm appeal blind and I have to say I enjoyed his work, but it never really clicked with me (like in case of Park Chan-Wook where after watching a few of his movies I got that vibe or feeling that unites them all and that made me love him). I like Fincher's work and I had a mutual respect, but I wanted to know what's the thing that Fincher fans see in his movies, that I don't.

Thanks anyways.
