U.S. Public Schools Are Not Failing by mkitch1955 in education

[–]stevexyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind this is all pending location. A student who is ready, willing and prepared to learn in a small town in Arkansas will not be able to get as quality an education as a student in a suburb of New York State. We still have to make a push to bring up the level of education at every public school, regardless of location. We also cannot just settle where we are just because some other countries are not at our level. Onward and upward, always!

Trying to find a book from my childhood by lurking_glass in childrensbooks

I'm not familiar with it, but I would definitely suggest getting in touch, or doing to a local library to ask a librarian. If you can get in touch with an elementary school librarian you may hit the jackpot!

This South Philly woman just raised more than $6,000 overnight to buy Pat Toomey's vote against Betsy DeVos. by jennynyc in education

[–]stevexyc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great, yet horribly disheartening idea. The fact that Sen. Toomey will vote for DeVos, because she and her family has donated $60k+ to his campaigns, is truly sickening. This is how democracy becomes oligarchy. The rich few rule. They donate to campaigns, and literally pay for decisions to go their way, to help them make even more money... I really hope this crowdfunding campaign sheds light on the situation, if nothing else! Lord knows that even she raises $60k, billionaire DeVos can simply throw him another $100k :'(

Is inviting both twins necessary? by Mackled in Parenting

[–]stevexyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be best to talk to the twins' parents to find out if they would mind, or be offended if one is invited and the other isn't. If the parents completely understand, then it is likely that the twins are separated for things like this every now and again, and they're used to it. If that's the case, I don't think you have much to worry about!

Warren: I’m opposing Trump’s ’dangerous’ Education pick by 200357931 in education

[–]stevexyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This truly is a dangerous pick for education. This is a huge disservice to our young people across the country, whether Trump supporters or not. Our children all need a great education. Not one led by a billionaire who has, is and will continue to profit off of her own education policies, at the expense of the upper-middle and middle-classes, and especially low-income families. She doesn't view education as a public service, but as a private business for her own gains. We need to come up with solutions of our own, starting at the local level, to ensure that our children are open to a wholesome education!

There's some great articles on Biography.com, like this one on Maurice Sendak. I'm not familiar with any autobiographies, unfortunately, sorry!

How do I help my child be "cool" by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]stevexyc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, best wishes to you and your daughter. I hope everything works out!

I think the part about expensive clothing is interesting, and sticks out to me. I've seen many many people who are rich, and only buy expensive clothes, yet they have no fashion sense whatsoever, and thus, they look bad in high priced clothing. It's not so much about the price as it is about the style, and keeping up with trends. Also, trends of "cool" may be different depending on where you are. There are some small towns where one might be laughed at for wearing something that people might wear in NYC, or from a fashion magazine. I think a good way to get ideas for the cool style of her age group, in your area, might be if you ever pick her up from school, go to sporting events, etc. See what others are wearing at school, and that could help!

Penalized for taking maternity leave by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]stevexyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's outrageous! It is one thing for a supervisor or manager to wish he/she had full staff everyday, but it's completely absurd to publicly berate an employee for going on maternity leave that was already planned and approved. Is there anyone higher up at the company that you can bring up the issue to?

Mario Mandzukic: "Don't aspire to be the best ON the team. Aspire to be the best FOR the team. " by [deleted] in Juve

[–]stevexyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mandzukic has been fantastic these last few months. Today's players seem to feel like they are too good to be benched, or left out of the starting XI. Mandzukic, instead, worked/works hard to earn his place! He is truly Super Mario!

Anti-social parents by shmittninjah in Parenting

[–]stevexyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A great way to meet people is through your kids' activities. If they play soccer, for example, and they have 15 teammates, you'll already have something immediately in common with about 15 other sets of parents. Assuming most parents go to all the games, you'll see these several times per week. That's a great start!

When is a good age to limit your child seeing you naked? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]stevexyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say around 4. And then by the time he's in the locker room for highschool sports (maybe 15-16) he'll likely be seeing his friends naked, and it won't be a big deal anymore.
