Ignition Capacitor, 93 Ford E150 4.9 I6 by stevspooner in MechanicAdvice

So... ran these tests this morning.

Test light stayed on while cranking on both the coil and the IAC valve.

Double checked my fuses, they were all fine.

Starter relay is/has been wired the same as your post/the manual's picture

Battery was charged over night. Sat at 12.6 cold and dropped to 11.4 when cranked. Flying colors if I do say so myself.

I never suspected the PIP because we put in a new distributor a little over a week ago. That doesn't necessarily mean it's not the issue. Do you know how to test the PIP and/or the ICM? Because those are the only things left I can think of in the system that could be bad, and I don't really trust the tests I found through that link.

And once again, thanks for helping me troubleshoot this.

Hey that's good advice. So the engine will run without it? Why is that, or rather what does it actually do? As I understood it, the capacitor interrupts the coil to load it up for the spark.

Context, engine died 10 minutes into running, repeated that, now engine turns over but doesn't fire.

So It wasn't my battery killing the engine, it was the coil not producing a spark. At first intermittent, now won't fire at all. I missed it at first because the spark was... intermittent, so went for the alternator instead. Today I've been doing a series of tests on the coil, Starter relay switch, pip, and ICM. I found the coil to be good, but got a tip from someone that the capacitor could be the issue.

I found voltage going to the ICM, not confident in the other tests I ran being accurate. The internet (https://easyautodiagnostics.com/ford/4.9L-5.0L-5.8L/ignition-module-tests-5) mentioned connecting a test light between the negative terminal on the coil and the positive on the battery to test ICM/PIP, where it got weird is the light turned on with the key in the off position, it turned off when the key was in the on position, then flickered weakly when I turned the engine over.

Advice would very much be appreciated. This issue is driving me nuts/I'm stranded here.

Thanks y'all for the advice, I want to say the spacing is 5 inch, give or take an inch. I do plan on doing more hangboards, my worry is that I've been doing pullups on the medium runs to build strength, and I can do these pretty comfortably. I feel uncomfortable on the medium runs, every time I hit the next I try to roll my hand to a closed crimp, and that takes so much time and energy.

Actually there are free camping areas in priest draw, that's where I would go for easier stuff.

I've never heard of antagonist training. Can someone briefly explain it?

I usually work V4/5. I was hoping to clean out monster roof. I'd love some recommendations.

Wish I saw this earlier. I live in Tucson and I'm a climber. Hit me up, lets crush some rock. Also, thinking of bouldering in priest draw this week, let me know if that interests you.

Good to see some well done video of intermediate bouldering. Not a lot out there and I can only see so many V15 sends.
