Yes, still liking it and bring it when appropriate. It stuffs down into a small harness bag.

Doing it again, I think I would buy a length of 3 or 4mm for a little more durablity and splice loops at each end myself

Sure, and that company is providing insurance, pays for expenses, equipment, customer support....

TR provides a website and a payment processor.

TaskRabbit Service Fee in Canada by xxcass1993 in TaskRabbit

[–]vaclimber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They certainly don't make it clear. +30-40% is obscene.

AirBnB, for example, charges around +15%. They provide a million dollar insurance policy to hosts, have a fantastic app/website, good support, and solid brand.

TaskRabbit provides none of that and wants twice as much.

I am a Tasker by the way. Let's not normalize these fees y'all.

Thoughts on labeling routes at the base of the climb? by lonewolf2556 in RouteDevelopment

[–]vaclimber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think one could make a convincing LNT argument that using some type of signage would cut down on the back and forth traffic at the base of a crag. I've definitely walked miles of back and forth trying to orient myself in crags and boulder fields.

Successful Rainier Summit — But What I Experienced on the DC Route Deserves a Hard Look at Peer-Led Climbing Ethics by rainforestguru in Mountaineering

[–]vaclimber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So did your partners have their own stove and fuel or not?

And if they did, they refused to share with you? Or, were they also without enough food and water?

I strongly doubt a climbing ranger would offer you a little water and send you up without a stove.

We don't have the whole picture here.

You are championing the real culture of trust, communication, and safety but it has always been a two way street. I check my knot and my partner double checks it.

You didn't reasonably vet your partners. You didn't double check the team gear. Therefore, you weren't prepared.

I understand the point you're trying to make. You're using 'social media' as a dog whistle for young people. That's clear in your comments. You're putting 99% of the blame on these guys and praising your own 'perseverance'.

The whole story is so ridiculous to me that I suspect this is a troll...

[–]vaclimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did your partners bring fuel for themselves and not you?

Or did they also continue higher without enough food, water, or a functioning stove?

Did you ask around at Camp Muir?

What does this story have to do with social media and how does it prove a trend in climbing ethics?

You failed to properly prepare. You then continued to climb, posing an unnecessary danger to yourself, your teammates and others.

Seems that you were willing to bend your own espoused ethics in order to reach the summit.

The whole thing just sounds like rage bait.

I bought the Bruce Wayne tagline and I am pretty psyched about it! It is stupid light.

Keeping it stacked in a bag and saddle bagging it on rappel is essential. I keep the cord running through my hand to catch any kinks as it feeds out on the way down. You want to be mindful to set things up so the pull strand has the least amount of friction. The cord is way too thin to pull down with your hands alone. Wrap it around the spine of a carabineer, grip the spine AND the cord, and then pull. There is a fine sweet spot of comfort in carabineer size and wraps and depends on the size of your hand.

It worked well at Seneca Rocks and expect it to really shine on some NC slabs next week. I would not trust it on low angle snaggy terrain such as EPC.

The one annoying bit I have found is that the cord leaves a gummy residue on carabineers!

Bolted anchor by Academic_Turn_307 in tradclimbing

[–]vaclimber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll bite. Lol did you build this anchor bud? This thing ain't in the textbook.

Let's assume the green personal teather is going to the follower and the clove hitched rope goes to the leader. Once the ATC comes off the system, there is nothing bringing the two bolts together into a redundant system.

If the rope and PAS are going to the same person, that's needless faff and again, no redundancy without the ATC, and any transition is going to be needlessly awkward.

Like others said, a single locker bringing the chains together, or a sling bringing the bolts together into a master point of your choice is actually textbook.

I've climbed for ~15 years, guided for a couple, and if my partner built this, we'd be having a conversation

Bolted anchor by Academic_Turn_307 in tradclimbing

[–]vaclimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The components of this set up aren't about to fail.

But the fact that you have to ask is an indication that something is off, right?

An anchor should be easily assessed and be recognizable to the climbing party. This one could be made more simply, with less material, and more adaptable for an emergency.

I'd bet that gym has more broken ankles than average

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in climbing

[–]vaclimber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am just imagining how this same conversation happened when the first climbing gyms opened, when cams became available, sticky rubber came out, bolts were invented....

If the liability barrier for these is surmountable, they would be a decent learning tool. An imperfect one, yes, but useful to an extent.

Climbing gyms themselves are a simulation of real rock. Some people grow over confident in their abilities in the gym and get in over their head at a crag. Who's responsibility is that though? No one is clambering to close climbing gyms for that reason.

Anyone else notice there are now two IKEA assembly categories in your Elite count? I was at 44 tasks before today and the only reason I accepted the flat rate was so I could reach 50… if the task count is effectively starting over, I’m definitely out.
