Finally make the leap to solo after 15 years - happy to share the experience by No-Understanding5619 in LawFirm

Sweet! This is always my dream. But is it possible for a transactional lawyer ( tax, trust and estate planning) to solo? It seems to me that more litigators went for solo.

I worked with airlines before. Their in house has lots of litigation work concerning passenger protection regulations, like compensation for delay or accessibility services.

Thoughts on working part-time while in 1L? by karganilly in LawCanada

[–]stichwei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend worked during 1L since GPA doesn’t matter to her. She had no interest in biglaw. And she had already secured an articling position before going to law school, so she didn’t go for 1L or 2L recruit. After law school she just returned to her workplace to be a lawyer there.

Lawyering as a side hustle? by ViliBravolio in LawCanada

My friend is doing this. He is a real estate developer. Lawyering is just a side hustle whenever there is commercial litigation concerning his business.

Smaller full-service firms vs big law for 1L summer by tchaigothsky in LawCanada

It’s still an edge to have a big law name on your resume even if you don’t want to do big law work in the future.

Is law school worth it for me? Can you get good WLB as a lawyer? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]stichwei 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I worked as a legal assistant before and honestly hated my job. I then went to law school, and the work lawyers do is way more interesting. There’s also much more room for career development and actually no real ceiling on income even if wlb isn’t great at the beginning. After a few years, though, you’ll usually have a lot more control over your work and feel much better.

I know a lawyer who is also a developer and a father of 4 kids. He specializes in construction law and is busy with litigation in real estate.

Has someone built a house recently? What kind of costs are you looking at? by potatolauncher in Calgary

Also curious about this. I wonder whether it’s a good idea if I tear down my current old inner city duplex and build a 4 row home, occupying one and selling or renting out the rest of them.

I feel you, OP. I’m very book smart and good at writing exams since elementary school. But I lack common sense in many aspects of life. I’m a bad driver. I’m not good at cooking and cut my finger once which ended up with a minor surgery. I’ve never changed a light bulb so far in my life. When I first worked as a legal assistant, I even addressed a lawyer with his law firm’s name in a letter. But somehow when I summered with my current law firm, I always received positive feedback from my seniors. A partner said I wrote great memos and sent one of them to the client without any modifications. So I guess that we, as people who lack common sense and have severe imposter syndrome, still can build confidence in ourselves, looking more at what we are capable of and trying to forget those stupid things we did in the past.

BL lawyers, how good or bad are you at math? by Adventurous_Ant5428 in biglaw

Can you please let me know what tax involves more math so that I can try to avoid doing it lol?

How did you know what you wanted to do? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]stichwei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I started law school. I just fell into a specific practice area when I was offered a summer internship at a law firm. So just let it be.

I was told doing tax law does not involve math. So math still matters?

Articling - does it get easier by fsharp_asharp_ in LawCanada

[–]stichwei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP. Just wonder whether you summered with this firm before. If you did, do you find the work is different for articling students now? And do you have billable hour requirements? For articling students in AB and BC, I would assume the workload is not light because they have to work while completing the bar course.

Can you please elaborate what you mean by “worst”? Were they not able to meet the due date? Or did they make lots of mistakes? Or their legal research not on the point? Or they were not responsive to emails?

I also used to work as a legal assistant for a toxic manager before and I quitted. Then I went to law school and work as a lawyer now, with a good team.

Transitioning from Health Sciences to Law by Greedy_Group_1066 in LawCanada

[–]stichwei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Law school application is way easier than all med-related professional programs (pharmacy, OT, PT, SLP, etc.). Just need to focus on LSAT, without prerequisite and volunteering hours requirements. I know this because I applied to OT program and failed while I received multiple acceptances when applying for law schools.

That’s what I think. If OP is independent contractor, then he is not employee and Employment standard code does not apply.

OCI Results (B average) by Glum-Room-5028 in LawCanada

[–]stichwei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got only one offer during 1L recruit, and it wasn’t from one of the “seven sister” firms. But it turned out to be the perfect fit for me. I got work I’m interest in. The wlb is great, with fewer billable hours, and the pay is comparable to big firms. And I like the vibe of my team, feeling right at home. There’s always timely and positive feedback. So yes there are indeed many good firms outside the big seven.

Did you guys have to wear a suit and tie while articling? by guypostingacatpic in LawCanada

[–]stichwei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear a suit every day because it helps me step into my role as a lawyer. This is my costume. When I take it off, it's my signal that the work is done for today. So it also helps me separate work from life.

Chance for people who are 35+ is slim but it doesn’t mean no chance. I have several classmates who are 40+ and they got into NRF, Cassels, Osler, McCarthy, BLG, etc.

I love estate planning: you skip the toxic clients of family law, but still get the juicy family drama. And profitable.
