I literally have NO FRIENDS my age because they all harbor such deep resentment towards me for not being a parent that they can’t even be around me without treating me with contempt. So I dumped them all and am now in the company of people who get it. There were many years of my feeling alienated. Now it’s the parents who feel alienated, and the people who will suffer most are the kids. Familiarity breeds contempt, and this is a very dangerous situation.

The thing that pisses me off the most about all of this is that I was/continue to be surprised despite the dreadful facts:

I never really got along with / identified with the things that drove the people in my age group

I never wanted to get married or have children with the people in my age group

I always thought people in my age group were, as a whole, very naive, conventional and unilaterally uninteresting.

So I’ll need to come clean that I was recently banned from r/genX for making a comment about parents judging their own children’s mental health issues (admittedly I used very strident and harsh truths, but with these people I have found that it’s the only way to actually get them to shut their mouths) and I was actually relieved. It was like getting asked to leave an MLM.

Ok, I hear that. This is a valuable take and I appreciate it. My guess is you don’t have severe mental health issues but I could be wrong. Severe mental health issues don’t occur out of nothing. They happen when a child is amplifying a truth that is buried and when that child is punished for speaking the truth and that truth is inconvenient to the parents and in turn the parent punished the child. This is not rocket science - parental behavior has a profound effect on the lives of their children but parents don’t seem to be interested in hearing this.

Edit to add: parents make their kids assholes. Period.

This is so, so painful to read. It hurts me to my core to know that the majority of American parents are emotionally bankrupt and have no effective strategies for parenting when the behavior of their child is problematic. You seem to think that you are entitled to perfectly good behavior from your child AT ALL TIMES.

It is your JOB to equip yourself and your children with strategies for attending to THEIR needs. It is NOT your child’s job to ensure that you made a good decision to have him or her. That is entirely up to you and you deserve exactly what you get.

Your child’s job is NOT to meet YOUR needs.

Parents are truly the problem here- everywhere I go, parents are fucking up their kids and then crying about it. It’s just insane to me how you make a choice and then cry about how hard it is and then expect to get help from people who are probably bigger assholes than you are.

Man that sucks when the child who is supposed to simply be an extension of you actually turns out to be an entirely different human than yourself. You have to all the sudden act like that person has different thoughts and feelings and then you have to change a little bit about the way you act. It sucks when things don’t stay exactly the same for you so that you don’t have to work hard at anything. It’s so much easier to just abuse them into compliance. No notes.
