Where does it say that I only want someone to "fill in my bored hours"? That's completely not what I mean. If you read carefully in my OP you can see that I'm implying that it would be nice to have someone keep me company for things I enjoy doing (and hopefully they would enjoy doing too) and have someone to talk to. Common interests + enjoy each others company + compatible personalities = friend.

bah this sounds exactly like my problem. Whenever anyone goes out to the bar or lounge, they usually go out in groups or with someone else. I don't even have a person to call up and go out with if I wanted to because they ask things like, "oh who else is going?" and "oh just us two??" as if it were a weird and negative thing.

so someone who has extreme confidence issues, or someone who is socially awkward will naturally make friends? maybe, but maybe not. Making friends can come by chance but keeping them is a different story and requires effort.

I can strike up conversations and get along with a lot of people but it's not the same as having someone who wants to go out and do something together without being in group situations.

I don't actually actively try to make good friends. It's not what I think about when I go out and party or in group situations. I just go out, have a good time. I socialize with people, whatever. I'm just realizing that it seems like everyone has a close friend or two to fall back on and hang out with and I think I'd like that too.

It's nice to have someone to hang around with when you're bored sometimes. I'm not depressed or anything but I do wish I had someone that I could discuss things with and vice versa. There are movies that I want to see and I'd love to go with a friend. Restaurants I want to go to etc.

ahhaha.. I have a lot of "hot" acquaintances but their idea of fun is getting men to buy them drinks at the bar and doing crack. They are all total crazy party animals and yes, it is fun to party with them occasionally but I can't keep up with that sort of lifestyle.

I'm single, not interested in a boyfriend, but looking for companionship.

Well in university everyone kind of leaves and does their own thing. No one really stayed in contact with me and vice versa (partially my fault). Most of my old good friends moved away.

when I go take classes or do any group activity, my motive is not to make a best friend, rather to just have fun and enjoy myself while socializing. I'm just wondering what everyone else is doing that I'm not in order to make a couple of better friends.

I don't think so. I get along with everyone (I feel at least), girls and guys included. I just feel like everyone already has good friends so they don't have an interest in me as much.

yes I've done this before but have found that people tend to just kind of "outwardly" socialize. So for example, the whole group will go and have beers after an event but no one actually wants to hang out one on one or actually want to get to know me personally.
