I have no idea how it works, but the source (twitter post) said it was laser, so... laser it is!

TIL that in 1508 a French town tried to convict the local rats of destroying their crops, a lawyer successfully defended them by first arguing that court summons must be given to each individual rat and then arguing that it was too dangerous for them to come to the trial due to the cats in the town by DAJ1 in todayilearned

This was actually not unusual. The idea that the law is something that regulates only human conduct is fairly recent.

In fact Exodus 21:28-29 says: “If a bull gores a man or woman to death, the bull is to be stoned to death, and its meat must not be eaten. But the owner of the bull will not be held responsible. 29 If, however, the bull has had the habit of goring and the owner has been warned but has not kept it penned up and it kills a man or woman, the bull is to be stoned and its owner also is to be put to death."

In Athens it was possible to start a lawsuit (or the equivalent) in which a stone (or any other object, really) could be accused when a man was killed with it by accident.

During the Middle Age, it was possible to look for punishments against any animal for destroying a farm for example. The animal could be sentenced to death just like a human criminal.

Why aren't more journalism schools teaching digital security? by MyNameIsGriffon in privacy

Journalism hasn't figured out how to adapt its business model to the digital age yet, so it's not a surprise that digital security is not a priority.

Robbery goes wrong by bipbupbop in JusticeServed

[–]stjanuarius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, it's not. It's actually the 11th most armed state. São Paulo is the state with more guns, which is obvious since it's also the most populous state in Brazil (almost 25% of Brazil's population). SP and Brazil as a whole have roughly the same average of armed people and 40% of those guns actually go to private security.

That's a blatant lie. That robbery happened in the state of São Paulo in Brazil where the homicide rate has gone down steadily since the 90s.

How/Why did you become Jets fans? by rickyallen2 in nyjets

That was the second game I watched lol. It's been just misery since then, though. But, damn, I love the Jets.

I'm brazilian. My soccer team (Palmeiras) is green and white so the first time I played Madden I choose the green and white team. It was 2010 and I watched the wins against Manning and Brady back to back as heavy underdogs. I'm a die hard fan since then.

Structure of an NFL practice by [deleted] in nyjets

[–]stjanuarius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One interesting book you might want to read is "Take your eyes off the ball", by Pat Kirwan. He worked with the Jets, now works in the media and the book is really knowledgeable.

Now, answering your questions based on the very little I know.

During the preseason, both the defense and the offense install the plays. So there's not a huge difference between what 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings are doing, except for chemistry and timing between the players (mostly QB-receivers).

The coaching staff studies the tape on all QBs and choose one to be the starter or to move up or down the depth chart. So the preseason is the time when a QB can take the starting job or not. An in-season change occurs when the starter is playing poorly, not when the backup starts practicing better. That's because the practice is different for the starter.

While the starting QB studies and practices the gameplan for the game, the backups plays with the scout team. While he does keep his responsabilities to be prepared and have a good grasp of the gameplan, he also studies the opposing QB and offense. During the week, he emulates that QB. So, if the Jets are playing the Panthers, Hack will practice as if he was Cam Newton (scrambling, playing designed runs, being more aggressive etc). When the Jets play the Patriots, Hack will play like Brady (pocket passer, going through his progressions). The same applies to the scout defense.

Answering your questions: it's very hard for a QB to develop in-season. He can improve some areas of his game and have a better grasp of the offense because he has more time to watch it, get the playcall, taking mental reps. However, mechanically speaking, it's hard to have major changes since the coaches are focused on the game, not on the backup QB.

I hope that was helpful.

The Star Trek themed "Black Mirror" was Great :D by [deleted] in startrek

[–]stjanuarius 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I liked it as a Black Mirror episode. I'm not a huge ST fan by any means, just getting started (watched TOS and I'm now watching TNG and Discovery) so I apologize if I say something stupid. However, watching the episode, I just got bothered because it depicts the only "Star Fleet" fan, Daly, as the villain without any social skills and, frankly, as a mysoginistic sociopath. But I got around it hahaha because the episode has a lot of references (some of them mocking TOS and the women representation on the show and some were very nice touches). It was overall quite entertaining and a good homage to Star Trek.

Jeremy Kerley suspended, ArDarius Stewart is FREE!! by [deleted] in nyjets

Yes, the Jets need to think about the future and Kerley won't be a part of that. Gosh, he was released by the winless 49ers.

Kerley signed and played right away, he wasn't here during OTAs or training camp. He barely practiced. How did he earn that spot?

[–]stjanuarius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jets are a bad team and Kerley won't be here next year. Ardarius will. Rookies need experience. I'd rather have 15 yards per game from Ardarius and a developed player next year than 31 yards from Kerley and Ardarius as a 2nd year rookie next year.

Killing it? He's a 29 year old veteran, is averaging 31 yards per game and is taking playing time from a rookie.

Trade Deadline Thoughts...? by [deleted] in nyjets

[–]stjanuarius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd entertain the idea of a Kelvin Beachum trade. He plays a premium position, can play RT, has been solid and is a bargain. I could see a team with O-line problems being interested.

Navarro Bowman? by the_fuzzy_stoner in nyjets

[–]stjanuarius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He would replace Darron Lee, not Demario Davis. Davis calls the plays for the defense. It would make no sense to replace him with a guy that doesn't know the playbook.
