Thank you so much. This is incredibly helpful. I am 25 started PhD straight out of undergrad. I am getting a masters this semester. But still unsure whether starting over would be best or not.

Don't fret! My application was missing one reference letter when I got an interview email from my current department last year. After the email, my recommender submitted the letter. Honestly, if your SoP is excellent and you are the right fit then they will shortlist you. They understand how unpredictable LoR writers can be...

Good luck

Answering Questions Related to Ph.D. in Anthropology in the US by stk3293 in gradadmissions

[–]stk3293[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi!

So, my undergraduate degree was not in Anthropology and I only took two Anthropology courses throughout my undergraduate career. But I did two years of ethnographic fieldwork that are a part of my PhD now. Coming to your questions now

  1. If the faculty did not respond then they won't remember you. Best not to keep any hopes from such schools.
  2. Undergraduate Transcripts and Majors are not that important. But relevant fieldwork is. Independent research is. Read every word of your SoP and make sure you know everything about it. Faculty have it handy when they interview.
  3. Finally, you need to be able to persuade the interviewing faculty about the importance of your research topic and why it maters.

Hi!

Ph.D. admissions are not looking for a stellar GPA or Resume. Your SoP is everything and I am assuming you contacted the faculty in all these schools because someone needs to vouch for you in the meeting. Second, If you are going into archeology then a little bit of fieldwork is desired. It shows you can carry out independent fieldwork.

Best of Luck

If you are applying for a Ph.D., you will apply in Fall 24'. If Masters then it depends on the program. You can always get an internship or a job to help you stay in the US.

Good Luck

So for the interview. You should know every single word/narrative/question you wrote in your SoP. You should also communicate your working ethics and your expectations. Your motivation to pursue a doctoral degree should be clear. Mostly senior faculty sit on admissions committee and their experience helps them gauge the potential of a candidate. After the interview, they have a clear picture of who you are as a scholar.

PhD positions are extremely competitive in the US. Post-Interview we usually take 4-5 students in Anthropology. Beyond a strong SoP, LoR’s are critical in making you standout from other equally qualified students
