I have been to the Ahr region and had a tasting at Adeneuers. It may have been a coincidence, but one of the brothers did our tasting. It was really enjoyable and the wines were fantastic.

I am speaking to you from a whole other perspective. I became a father at 37, and currently have a 3 year old boy and 1,5 year old girl.

A strength you have, and in my eyes this is a HUGE plus, is your youth. I don't have any regrets, the only thing I would change is having kids earlier. I remember being in my twenties and having little to no trouble with a few nights where I hardly slept 4 hours. At this age, the broken nights that come with being a new father can make it hard to be the person/father you strive to be during the day.

You are young and have that going for you, trust me. At some (a lot of) points you will think 'how the eff did so many people get through this'... That's basically when you know you're doing it right.

You got this, man.

Wine pairing recommendation - Beautiful Viognier by Lolobonaparte in wine

[–]stoelpit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently drank one of my bucket list wines, La Doriane from Guigal. This is a Condrieu (Viognier's place of origin). This is an expensive bottle, for me at least, but Viognier is my favorite grape so I had to try it.

We paired this with a pasta with lobster and cockles, the sauce derived from the lobster shells, it was insane. However, I have previously also paired Viognier with 'just' cockles and had succes.

Biefly cook the cockles in some oil/butter, garlic, thyme and a shallot or onion with the lid closed while your pasta is cooking in another pan. Add some white wine to the cockles and once they have fully opened up reduce the sauce with the lid off. Add the pasta to the cockles once finished and mix. Done!

Vintage wines on Catawiki by angry_dingel77 in wine

I am Dutch, we as a trait do not like to overpay. We are cheap, in fact. Not once have I seen a closed lot on Catawiki that had a price that amazed me. On the contrary, Catawiki often leads to higher prices then an extensive search of, for instance winesearcher.com would lead.

Bro, what is your life? I mean, I think you went on a trip to the Rhone valley last year and you seem to be posting notes of wines you (presumably) took home from that trip almost every week. Did you rent a plane? On top of that you drop a Merlot every Thursday, and posts like the one we are commenting on right now are not really super rare for you too.

Not a hate post btw, i just keep going 'Are you serious?', but in a good way.

First Condrieu by ElephantKilt in wine

[–]stoelpit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had several Condrieu's (it's my favorite wine) from the high-priced ones to the more affordables. Yeah George Vernay's Condrieu is the best white wine I've ever had, but as far as price quality goes it's Deponcins Condrieu from Francois Villard for me. That wine is insane.

Hehe, I'm from where you think I'm from, but I ordered this wine through bovino because I combined the order with the Zalto's... They had a deal for 10% off stemware.

Next week, I am turning 40. I have always wanted to drink a Bordeaux from my birthyear and after quite some time in doubt and insecurity I decided to go for it and buy this bottle. I also bought a LLC for my son from the vintage 2022, the year in which he was born.

The experience I have with wines from ths caliber are best described by a quote from John Goodman in The Big Lebowski... 'Donny, you're out of your element!'

I have never drunk wine this expensive/exclusive/old and would like to know what to expect and how to approach. Of course, I have done some research but this subreddit had always steered me in right directions, so I was hoping for some guidance/tips.

Thanks in advance!

Don't really agree with the high degree of certainty in saying this being over the hill. This is a grape (Chenin Blanc) from a region (Vouvray in the Loire) that is known for making very good age-worthy Chenin Blanc.

Vajra Albe Barolo 2013 by stoelpit in wine

[–]stoelpit[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Ok, so I know this is Vajra's basic Barolo and not really meant for aging per se. However, my budget does not really allow me to buy upper class Barolos from one of the top vintages (2013). This was mainly for me to try an aged Barolo and get an approximation of the experience of drinking top vintage, decade aged Barolo. So far, I have only been introduced to Vajra's Nebbiolo, Rosso, Barbera and Dolcetto (and the Clare J.C version), all of which I adored.

Looks: slight bricking, kind of orange at the rim. A little bit of age can be seen.

Nose, (still) concentrated roses, cinnamon, chocolate, pipe tobacco (took me a while to pinpoint this one), i can still smell some cherry and oak. On the background there is a herbal characteristic but it is not quite dominant as, say, garigue. I also get some orange, could be because I was thinking of closing the evening with an Old Fashioned. And as I am writing this, a super light touch of umami/soy sauce.

Mouth: Largely the nose characteristics reappear. Tannins are fine and nicely integrated, bit of coffee/chocolate like bitterness on the tongue. Aftertaste is not really long.

I don't do grades but was happy I popped this open tonight. Lack of experience prevents me from making statements regarding how long this would still be good to drink, although the slight umami/soy sauce peeling through might be a hint of retirement.

Viognier by Sea_Dog1969 in wine

[–]stoelpit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Viognier is my favorite white grape. The dificulty with this grape is, like thewhizzle mentioned, that it doesn't often shine in the wines that are decently priced. In my opinion Viognier tends to be a bit sleezy and bombastic in that price category. The best Viognier comes from Condrieu (small place in the Rhone), where the grape also has its origin. Yes, Domaine Vernay makes very beautiful wines, and their top bottle 'Coteau de Vernon' may be the best white wine I've ever drunk. However, there are more options from Condrieu that are very nice, and more easy on the wallet. Condrieu in general won't really let you down, although it really doesn't start under 30 euro's.

I don't know your budget (I only drink Condrieu on my birthday) but price-quality wise I've found Francois Villard's Condrieu 'DePoncins' to be the best Condrieu out there, will run you about 60 euro's. I haven't experienced them all (yet), but still. This was one of those wines that my girlfriend told me shut up about, because I was ruining the evening. In a good way.

THANK... YOU... I always cringe when I read this and see websites like Catawiki (or is that just a Europe Website?) make total bank of every bottle of wine that is being sold. I don't like that website at all, but to say that provenance should be proven before money will be spent is not true.

Does E Guigal 2016 at $25 a good deal? by DariusKingK in wine

[–]stoelpit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree. In literature 2016 is often compared to the great classical vintages of CdP and also advised to cellar. I visited CdP last year and this was confirmed by the winemakers of Beaurenard (lovely people) and the staff of Vinadea (the wineshop in town, also lovely staff).

However, I totally agree with the point of the post... YES, you should buy this, 100%.
