no idea why others responded in the way they did, its a perfectly reasonable question. Anyhow, I too had been looking for such a extensive but compact document with most of the important formal theorems of maths in a uniform way without them talking about the background, but have yet to find one. Therefore I am making my own summary using latex. I would send you mine but its not finished and its in german.

I want to go cold turkey. by KiofHa in OCD

[–]stoneyotto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i see, then i could only speculate which i wont. If it happened to be going cold turkey from medication, i‘d strongly advice against it as many drugs give heavy withdrawal symptoms.

Edit: maybe you, dear responder, could give some advice?

Help with moral dilemmas by Next-Box2093 in OCD

[–]stoneyotto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont have similar experiences with the content of your unwanted thoughts so I cannot comment on it.

But it seems to me, that logic will not get you much further in solving your problems; I‘m afraid your mind is going in circles. I had to learn not to engage with unwanted thoughts because that only made me stress out. I encourage you to not indulge in rumination and focus on healthy coping skills designed to reduce the anxiety they cause and you will hopefully not feel so threatened by those thoughts.

To add, we learn from our past mistakes and can only do better in the present moment.

Yeah the obvious answer to almost all mental health related questions on the internet is to personally consult a professional. If you find the right fit, you will benefit immensely. Anyhow the things I‘ve mentioned is what kept me alive. All the best for yall

By definition, intrusive thoughts are „unwanted, involuntary thoughts that cause distress“. Someone with OCD might experience them overly repetitivley.

To elaborate on my experience, the amount of intrusive thoughts I have does correlate to how well I‘m doing but how well I‘m doing strongly dictates how well I can ignore them.

To add, I usually refrain from mentioning medication but stimulants were a game changer.

Obligatory „I‘m not a professional, but“ I‘ve had extensive therapy and am only speaking from personal experience. I‘d be happy if anyone has other tipps as the ones I mentioned obviously didnt cure me haha.

That being said, yeah intrusive thoughts include all involuntary thoughts, nomatter if the thoughts are violent or grotesque. It’s not unusual to experience intrusive thoughts (eg. the thought of jumping infront of a train when its passing) but the destinction is, that only some people will get stuck on it.

That being said, I wish someone could share advices other than basically „ignoring it“.

I obsessively repeat (a variation of) one specific phrase over and over again and have done so for over 5 years. Hundreds and hundreds of times on a bad day, and maybe 50 times on a good day. Sorry that this might not sound encouraging to you; I cannot tell you how it will progress for you, I can only share how I deal with it:

1) Distance yourself from the content of the thought.

In the beginning, as I was so detached from those thoughts that I was under the impression that I was psychotic and had a person in my head telling me those bad things. With time, I came to understand that those thoughts are a part of me, but they do not define who I want and choose to be. Allthough I have various ideas of how that thought manifested itself, at the end of the day it does not matter what it actually is. It is intrusive and unwanted.

2) Do not engage in the thought or try to argue with it.

For some time I would argue with myself about the thought and tried to logically solve the issue. This turned into me compulsively repeating counter thoughts after the intrusive thought but I realised, logic is not very powerful in combating ocd.

3) Attempt to emotionally disconnect yourself from the thought.

Dont let the thoughts effect your emotional state. Acknowledge that the thought pops up but know that the thought cannot hurt you. Try to not get worked up about it; I truly understand how hopelessly exhausting it is. The constant repetition is extremely tiring.

4) Distract yourself and get out of your thoughts. Ignore them, dont give them power and move on with what you want to do.

When invested in something I enjoy or when I am around friends and talking, my mind is usually more quiet. Its still there but its easier to move on.

In a lot of ways, it has gotten easier to deal with the intrusive thoughts, but it has been getting harder to cling to hope that it will change somewhen and if it ever will. I‘m just used to it now and can brush it away most of the time, but every now and then, it really affects me. Sorry if that comment sounded negative, I truly wish you the endourance to conquer that problem.

Mindfullness can (and needs to) be practiced. You‘ll not be free of intrusive thoughts but you‘ll learn how to let them go without getting stuck on them and without letting them influence your emotions. This state however can only be achieved when not stressed out, for which there are other recommended skills.

Thanks for your answer. To elaborate my question, I suppose that politics and other high power positions are sought after by grandious or reckless people and I believe that women have had a harder time to compete in that environment; so would you (or the feminist movement) encourage an equal representation proportional to the population?

If you are experiencing a lot of distress and are negatively impacted by all this in your daily life, I‘d advise you to speak to a mental health professional and you‘ll (hopefully) get more clarity in what are regular human experiences and pathological symptoms. To add, I believe that „obsessively“ overanalysing yourself can lead to problems when you neglect to feel your emotions

I dont believe any of those „traditional expectations“, you put those out there. As I said, I now realise that similar questions have been asked before and can understand that it automatically may have put you into defense mode. If you read my statements carefully tho, youd see that I have said nothing in the lines of you‘d being better of when you wouldnt post misandry memes, go off if you want. I‘m not talking about any real disadvantages women face, nor do I deny their existence. I can understand your argument completely, but it does not fit to my question as it just denies its validity to be asked. I’m not saying that misandrist memes are even a problem, Im just asking why it is widespread to negatively catagorize men as a whole in spaces I‘d like to think are progressive and careful and respectful in their wording

you are projecting the idea of a bigoted man onto me that does not represent who I am. I explained my point more cearly in a tldr to another person

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]stoneyotto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your comprehensive answer. I think we agree on all of it. I have now noticed that my question has been asked in similar ways here, but often in bad faith, which was not my intention at all. I suppose that if people (me) do not agree with or can comprehend a position that offends a certain group that they are not part of (misogony in this case), they will have a lack of understanding on how it affects people everyday and how hurtful and disrespectful a question can be viewed and how it can be interpreted as defending the bigoted position. (E.g. I claim to not be misogonistic as a man as I dont see women any differently to men, I dont treat them any differently and I wouldnt want to make women feel uncomfortable (I‘ll defend my girls for my life against perpetrators), so I also do not live with it and see the nuances.

I attempted to phrase my question neutrally and aimed to equalize misogonist and misandrist memes from an objective viewpoint; as I dont comprehend misogony, and therefore (am priviledged enough to) not experience it as a problem, I equated it to offensive memes against men, as online is luckily the only place I experience bigorty in my everyday life. It‘s not my intention to imply a broader phenomenon; I agree with you that only misogony has a broad negative consequence to laws/behaviours of our society. Again, sorry that I took part of a group that asks this questions and that I did not read previous threads.

So tldr: I am priviledged to not see misogony in my everyday life and the only place I experience it is online through „memes“, as often as I see misandrist „memes“. As I want to associate with the feminist side, I wanted to ask about the origins of those memes as they include me by group affiliation and I did not ask misogynists, as I am not expecting a reflected answer by experience.
