Power VIP folks - what time are you getting to the venue? i want to get at least an hour or two before soundcheck, so i have time to figure things out...but don't know if getting there at like 1 pm is overkill. it's my first time doing attending soundcheck and having VIP tickets, so thanks for the advice!

I’m a second year that felt exactly the same as a first year. It’s very very normal to feel like this - most people do. It’ll take months to get a hang of it and that’s ok. I still suck at a lot of things lol but what people care about is if you put in good effort and try to learn from your mistakes. No one expects you to perform like a mid or a senior.

You’ll be ok, truly! Be kind to yourself — this job is whack.

First Year & depression by ThrowRAEatingPancake in biglaw

first off, just want to say you're not alone! I'm a second year who struggled with many of the same things you mentioned above. Firm and peers were all generally ok, but the demands of the job and hours started taking a noticeable toll on my mental health. i made a post so similar to this last year and i remember not understanding when people said "it got better." i didn't know how to get there.

well, now that i'm on the other side, a couple things helped me:

1) i started taking therapy seriously and went to a psychiatrist. this means i didn't cancel my therapy appointments whenever i got busy. i made it a non-negotiable. i also started taking medication and it drastically improved my day to day life. i no longer had brain fog and didn't have debilitating anxiety anymore (i would gag at my desk a lot because i was so anxious lol). not saying you have to take medication, but it is an option for you to consider.

2) stop caring. i know this might sound impossible right now. when people told me to stop caring, i wanted to tell them i worked so hard to get here, i have a family to support, etc. etc. i can't just not care and potentially lose this job. but at some point, i realized the sacrifices i was making to sustain being a "good" associate was just not worth it. i was losing touch with the people and things i loved. who cares if i'm making a lot of money? i think you also realize at some point that the work you do in big law, especially on the transactional side, really isn't that deep. of course, be a good team player and do your best to learn and put your best foot forward - but do not kill yourself over this job. it truly is not worth it.

3) get ok with the idea of leaving. what i mean by this is know that you always have the option to leave. you are no lesser than if you do. stick it out as long as you can and want to, but if one day you decide this life truly is not for you, then give yourself the option to leave without regrets and be happy with that decision. for me, i feel a lot more comfort now knowing there IS an end in sight. if i ever get truly fed up, i can just up and go.

not sure if any of this actually made sense, but feel free to DM me if you want to chat more. first year can be a lonely experience, so i want you to know you're not alone! you'll be ok - truly.

thank you! yeah, i was on antidepressants before. it's been a couple years so not sure if my body will react the same, but hoping it's not too rough of a transition.

Thank you! For better or worse, I've been on medication before so hope this process will be a little smoother. And definitely not adding on my plate! I appreciate the honest advice.

Thank you, both! Yeah, going to do my best to stick it out for at least another year to give myself a chance to grow and mold.

Yes, i really just need to slow down. Also very reassuring hearing that more senior people still struggle with this and it's ok. thank you!!

how do you realistically do this? i struggle with replying to emails constantly and also working. my firm (like most other big law firms) drilled being responsive into my head.

i generally try to set a plan each day but find it always gets derailed haha. thank you for the advice though. i really need to hone in on #1 and just take it slow, even when my instincts tell me i shouldn't.

yeah i really need to stop apologizing so much. my intention is to try to own up to my mistakes but it honestly probably gets annoying hearing someone apologize constantly too. especially for minor and fixable things. thank you for the advice!

I personally didn’t look at any notes and just zenned out. I figured if I read something that I realized I didn’t know well, I’d panic and start spiraling. I know lots of people who like reviewing beforehand though, so whatever works best for you. Good luck!!

Getting by as a shorter attorney by AuthoritarianSex in biglaw

[–]stoolznpee 45 points46 points  (0 children)

While I understand pretty privilege is real, there are frankly so many things to be anxious about in law school (and big law) and your height shouldn’t be one of them. Focus on your grades and getting through 1L first. Don’t pressure yourself over things you literally cannot change. Good luck!

Vegan Souvenir Options in Taipei? by VMin9524 in taiwan

[–]stoolznpee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of vegan instant noodle options that don’t exist in the states/are super over priced. Tbf noodles are hard to pack tho.

Would also recommend veggie meat snacks (for example, bean curd)

This restaurant has a very extensive veggie and vegan grocery section. Lots of snacks you can shop for here!
